What did you book first?

I have had some issues with planning our wedding (family and money) but we are aggressively going to plan our wedding for next year starting now. We both agree the band is the most important thing to us but we don't know if this is just not done. My concern is because it is really late and we want to make sure we get a really good band and we are very flexible with the location.

Thanks guys for your thoughts.

Re: What did you book first?

halls fill up early...and while you will have a great band..you might have to listen to them while eating ritz crackers....if the band is more important then book them first..but dont wait too long before you get your hall

Re: What did you book first?

The hall first and foremost, along with the church.

Because every vendor will ask where, when and what time, and you will not have these answers until you book the hall.

Also because you are starting now, with 6 months to go, a lot of places might be booked already, and therefore you may have to change your date to get the place you love.

Once you have your date, then you can tell other vendors and book them, because they may not be available on every date.

Ceremony and reception place first, then the band.

Re: What did you book first?

I did it in order or where the most money would go first all the way to the bottom in this order:

Temple/Catering (same place)
Band
Photographer/Videographer
Florist

I am not needing or using limos
I dont consider my dress something to "book"

Everything else is incidental. Like invites and favors and what not.

Re: What did you book first?

Until you have a hall booked, you don't have a definite date. Without a date, it is next to impossible to book any other vendor.

Re: What did you book first?

Rule of thumb, you need to get your hall & church first bc they might not have a date available that you want! Plus when you book any other vendor they need to know the date in which you need their services, so they can see if they are booked. I am almost 100% a vendor will not book you until you have a set date & hall

Re: What did you book first?

If I was you, I would start going to band showcases, and start looking for a hall. Some bands showcase twice a month, and others every few months - so it may take a while to see a bunch of bands. Definitely start looking for a hall though, you may not think you care about the hall until you find one you love!

Good luck!

The Officiant. Only because I changed halls later on, from the UU church in Stony Brook to the UU church Huntington.

Re: What did you book first?

Yes, the hall. There are some vendors that are flexible to hold a date for a specific amount of time if you are really close to a decision. The date is really the most important thing though if you are between two halls that have the date reserved for you.

Re: What did you book first?

We did the Church first b/c there are so many "restrictions" to when/where/time etc. Once we did that, went to the Hall and booked, and then did the rest.

I would book the Hall first.

Hello luv. I am SO VERY HAPPY that you are planning for next year. I admit I didn't completely read through the thread to see some of the other girls answers, so if this is repetitive, forgive me, but a key component to choosing a band is size, and you'd really have to know the hall/room you will be in to know what will sound best and be better accommodated.

there is no reason why you can't actively research and pursue both at the same time, but you should really have your room booked before you settle on the band (IMO)

Re: What did you book first?

The hall you want may not have your dates avail. So you def need the hall booked to see if the band is avail that day.

Re: What did you book first?

we actually called our church first - once we got an idea of when we would like to get married - we made sure they were available. (get a few available weeks)

then we went to the hall and booked it.
i was more concerned with getting the afternoon slot @ my church than the week i would get married. i HAD to get married in my church.

but i would definitely book the hall before the band. halls fill up fast - and once you book your hall - you know what you have to work with.
