Wine ceremony - aka "liquid unity candle"
So, FH and I were originally going to do a unity candle (I even bought one), but then we talked to our officiant and liked the idea of a wine ceremony (liquid unity candle). Each of our mothers pours wine into a chalice, then FH and I both toast each other and pour one third of each of our glasses into the chalice, and then we drink together from the chalice. We are not very religious, so we liked this idea of the the wine pouring symbolizing the unity of our two families.
Has anyone done something similar or seen this done?

This sounds cool...our officiant told us last night about a sand unity ceremony where you have two different colored sand in two vases and you pour the sand into a large bowl. It mixes together like sand art and it's something you can keep forever. We didn't like the idea of a unity candle, but really like this idea. The wine sounds awesome too.

We're doing the sand ceremony as well, we loved the unity candle BUT the sand just seemed nicer and a bit different than the candle.

we thought of the wine thing for one second, until I imagined wine down the front of my gown! I am a klutz and I don't want any colored liquids near me that early into the night.
I think it is a great idea, though. We're probably doing the candle, so I'll have wax on my dress instead. Oh well, I'll be sure to get white candles!

 - nice! good luck with the candles, although now you have me paranoid about the wine - maybe i'll request white only!
