Can someone please explain to my Seattle fiance how rentals on LI work on holiday wknds!!!
He's driving me nuts. We have alot of his family coming in for our wedding next year during Labor Day wknd and he is so set on us and them renting a house, but doesn't understand why they're all $2800+ a week. Our wedding is in Sayville and he keeps talking about renting a house on Fire Island, which is very inconvienent. Am I wrong? It's been a while since I've lived on Long Island, but isn't the only way over there by ferry?

Fire Island would really not be a good idea. Especially for a holiday weekend. And yes, the only way to get there is a ferry. Tell him no way!

yes, the ferry is the only way over here, as far as driving goes. houses are def. in that $$$ range to rent, usually only by week or month. but see if the landlord can cut you some sort of deal for the weekend. somehow my friend did that for her sisters bach. party. we had a bunch of girls in one house for $150 each Fri night, Sat, and Sun am. Good Luck!

check out www.craigslist.org in the long island section. dont know about short term rentals, but if you look you might find something at a good price. i have to look for a rental for my FHs family for a month. 
oh yeah and fire island so wont work!

Are they set on a house? If they want a kitchen maybe you should find a Marriot Residence Inn. They are roomy and have kitchens and they'll be less than most house rentals.
I would do Fire Island on a holiday weekend- the Ferry might run on a limited schedule for that weekend!

My BIL lives in Seattle and they rent houses all the time for a week in the Summer and there are plenty of them. It's different there.
I would not go to Fire Island.

I know, he doesn't understand that even though you can rent a house on San Juan Island, WA for a reasonable price you can't in NY. He seems to be realizing it today after he's made some calls. It's just funny how our East Coast/West Coast differences show up sometimes. I've told him a million times that I would love to live back on Long Island if it wasn't so expensive and I think he sees what I mean now.

I'm from LI and FI and I now live in Seattle, so I know what you are going through (he's from NJ, so he at least has a clue). My FI's co-worker is getting married a week before us in Oregon and is paying $3000 for her ENTIRE WEDDING. Yes, three thousand. Dollars. My co-worker is getting married in Seattle in May, 2006, and is just starting to book her major vendors (with no problems!).
Have you gotten your FI to realize that you also can't book the house less than a month in advance?
It is so different.
