My wedding is THIS weekend and I'm freaking out about the photographer
Some background: My parents chose the photographer (on a recommendation from several friends) b/c I did not have time to book all of the vendors as I live out of state and got engaged right before starting a new job with long hours. I was a little worried about leaving something so important up to my parents, but they had seen his work before and people had good things to say. We had engagement photos taken recently (all in color) and was happy with how they turned out.
Today my FI sent my dad the photo list to give to the photographer. It was long and detailed, but it mainly listed a bunch of combinations of different family members. The photographer told my dad he probably can't get everything in b/c we're under a time constraint. I wasn't happy about that, but I'll try to make the best of it. The thing that got me so worried was my dad called to say the photographer is only going to take photos in color. Apparently, the photographer says it will take too much time to switch between black and white film/camera and color and since the prints (or camera?) are digital, they will make any shot I want in black and white afterwards. Has anyone ever heard of this? Will they come out the same as if he originally took the shots in black and white? I really like black and white and want a lot of black and white pics especially at the arboretum. Am I crazy for being worried? I just don't want to find out that the altered black and white shots look bad b/c having black and white pics are really important to me. Thanks for all of your help.

My FH works with photoshop alot. He's always changing color photos to B&W for me all the time. In my opinion, they look great. You can do just about anything with digital pictures. I dont think you have anything to worry about.

Keep in mind how much you are paying for this photographer. I am sure ALOT! I am. And you want what you want, it is your day.
I have 2 photographers one to take color and one to take B&W.
I know they can change pics to black and white but you can see what your other options are. Be insistant! Its your day.

You can always print it in black and white, and digital pics are awesome, so clear, so I wouldn't worry about taht...you'll see everything in color, and then choose what you'd like printed in black and white....
Also, it's true that there isn't a lot of time, and that you probably won't be able to get all the pics of family you want, so at least he was honest about that, rather than blowing sunshine up your tushy..

My photographer had two cameras. One loaded with B&W film and the other with color. I had one photgrapher, one assistant and one lighting assistant.

Re: My wedding is THIS weekend and I'm freaking out about the photographer
If he's shooting digital transforming to black and white should not be a problem...I believe film color vs. film black and white would be more of an issue but not noticeable to the lay person...
I was wavering between digital vs. film, color vs. black and white. In the end I chose film all color - prints that I want to change to black and white will be scanned and tweaked accordingly. My rationale was, can't go color from black and white, can go black and white from color.
Also consider it good that the photographer is honest with you now stating he will most likely not be able to get all the requested shots. An exhausted list is hard to do and sometimes compromises the quality of the photos (the photographer feels the need to check off the items on the list and get certain people in a photo regardless if they are yawning or not).

Re: My wedding is THIS weekend and I'm freaking out about the photographer
I heard from numerous photographers that they take all the pics in color bc it is easy to take color out, but not vice versa.

If its digital, its totally not necessary to have one guy b&w and one color. With digital pictures, they shoot them in color and convert to b&w in post production. If you are having a photographer who shoots film, then i could see wanting 2 of them, but if its digital its fine. Trust me, you can take any of the pictures they take of you and have them both in color and B&W. You'll be ok!

Re: My wedding is THIS weekend and I'm freaking out about the photographer
My photographer is all digital, and the beauty of that is that you can decide afterwards which photos you want in black and white and it will look perfect. It's actually better this way, because you can't go from black and white to color. I've heard of brides being mad because the picture they want in color is only in black and white. I think it will work out fine.

My belief is that most of the photographers who shoot digitally do it this way. With the wonders of computers, you can change color photos to black and white with no problem

Not to worry about the B&W from Digital film, and here's an example for you:
color:
sepia:
B&W
Here's a link to the page where the pictures can be found in a larger format

Re: My wedding is THIS weekend and I'm freaking out about the photographer
I would not worry about switching the pics from color to B&W. I work in the graphic industry and it's as easy as pressing 1 button to switch from color to B&W.
Don't worry about it, they will be perfect.

He's correct. My engagement pics were all done in color, but anything I wanted in b/w could be done afterwards.

Re: My wedding is THIS weekend and I'm freaking out about the photographer
The difference from changing color to b/w and shooting b/w is very minimal and the majority of pepole can't tell the difference...
as for thte time constraits...it is hard to find family members and combos... that is a fair statemetn depending on the amount of pictures you want unless they are all sitting there knowing they are next in line...
keep in mind, take pictures is a long process.. i wish i had more time to party...we took so much time out of the night to take pictures...
i dont regret taking so many pictures but then again, i wanted to party more and be with my guest. to resolve this, you need more time and that goes back to your first point about time issues.
good luck and the day is not about pictures...the day will always be the memory of it

Re: My wedding is THIS weekend and I'm freaking out about the photographer
Thank you all so much. I feel a lot better now after reading your comments and speaking to the photographer. The photographer is shooting in all digital and he assured me that the pics will come out really nice when they are changed to black and white. You girls are great.

I totally agree! Digital cameras are able to do just about anything you want now! So if you like any shot you can get both black and white AND color if you really feel like it! It will turn out great!!! Good luck at your wedding and an early congratulations!

Re: My wedding is THIS weekend and I'm freaking out about the photographer
The reason some photographers have to use two cameras is because they are still using the actual FILM cameras, so they have no choice but to use two, and switch back and forth.
Anything can be done with digital. I had my engagement pictures taken,( my photographer uses a digital camera) and had some in B/W, some in color. And you can also have the pictures made that are both B/W and color, you know, the ones where only the bouquet is colored and the rest is B/W. IMO you can do alot more with digital. Don't worry!!!
