Obviously, he is not an idiot and, most of our country seems to think he is doing a good job

Bush's job-approval rating to the lowest point of his presidency at 42 percent, according to a latest survey co-conducted by The Washington Post and US TV news network ABC.

Not saying whether I like or dislike but we have to realize that the President does not make any decision on his own. There is the cabinet, the senate, the congress, etc.

The President isn't running the country alone...

And Bush's 59 million plus popular vote total is the most votes received in the history of this country, surpassing Reagan's total in 1984.

You are completely entitled to your views

But regarding the above quote. . .

I just have to point out that the 48.27% of America who voted for Kerry (50.73% voted for Bush) was also the highest number of people voting for a losing Presidential candidate in the history of this country. . . unless of course you include Gore - but if you ask me he won that election.

2004 was the smallest margin of victory for a sitting president in the history of this country. (50.73% to 48.27%)

If you consider a vote for Kerry or Nadar as a vote against Bush - then in 2004 more people voted against Bush than any other sitting President in our country's history.

(numbers from Wikpedia.com)

So the fact that he was re-elected doesnt speak for itself - in my opinion.

I agree with everyone you'd expect me to agree with and have to give a big ditto sign to.

freedom of dissent. it's huge. it's wonderful. keep it alive

also, people act like bush is some victim of the media, but every president I can remember has been slammed by te media and hard. I mean, just look at Clinton. At least Bush is being criticized for his policy and not his bedroom behavior.

I believe we have a much more divided country than we did ten years ago. No poll I;'ve seen recently has shown any pverwhelming support for Bush..the numbers have been low since before the katrina disaster and resulting debacle. I think it's impossible to say that most of the country supports Bush and the dissenters are few. I feel we're a very divided country.

Re: Those who admit they HAVE a president named BUSH!

Take a look at George W's transcript to see how successful he was at Yale. He got in through connections, and was not a stellar student when he was there...He had been admitted with an SAT score of 1206, which would have gotten no one else into Yale, but having your grandfather and father attend did help him get in...His IQ is 100, while not bad, is not Mensa material either.

Re: Those who admit they HAVE a president named BUSH!

I read that Bush's grades actually were slightly better than Kerry's, got progressively better over the 4 years (kerry's didn't -- were just steadily mediocre to bad) and Bush's lowest grade was better than Kerry's. Know you didn't make the comparison but so many people during the election were so quick to crucify Bush as dumb and not a good student at Yale when they had no clue how the candidate they touted as the "intellectual" performed at the same university.

Free speech is a great thing and we're all entitled. One thing we all benefit from though is not to be dismissive of those with opposing views when we express our own. I love politics... I love debate and I will engage it in with anyone. IN fact, I often find it enjoyable. I just can't take it when people don't give me basic respect for my opinions or at least try to have some level of objectivity when talking with someone who has the opposing viewpoint. (general commentary, not based on LIW)

Re: Those who admit they HAVE a president named BUSH!

Kerry's grades did improve. Kerry started with a 71 average freshman year and finished with an 81 average senior year, while Bush had received a cumulative score of 77 for his first three years at Yale and a roughly similar average during his senior year.

But something good did come of his mediocre grades! When he spoke at the Yale convocation he said, “To those of you who’ve received honors, awards, and distinctions, I say well done, and to the C students…I say, you too can be President of the United States.” And to those D students, a Senator perhaps? Supreme Court Justice?

Re: Those who admit they HAVE a president named BUSH!

That was a good line in that speech and your add on was funnier... I was wrong about Kerry's grades not getting better -- they did. but Bush still graduated with an overall GPA one point higher than Kerry (77-76) and Kerry got 4 Ds while there, Bush only one.

"In 1999, The New Yorker published a transcript indicating that Bush had received a cumulative score of 77 for his first three years at Yale and a roughly similar average under a non-numerical rating system during his senior year.

Kerry, who graduated two years before Bush, got a cumulative 76 for his four years, according to a transcript that Kerry sent to the Navy when he was applying for officer training school. He received four D's in his freshman year out of 10 courses, but improved his average in later years. The grade transcript, which Kerry has always declined to release, was included in his Navy record. During the campaign the Globe sought Kerry's naval records, but he refused to waive privacy restrictions for the full file.

Bush went to Yale from 1964 to 1968; his highest grades were 88s in anthropology, history, and philosophy, according to The New Yorker article. He received one D in his four years, a 69 in astronomy. Bush has said he was a C student."

Grades don't always translate into how intelligent a person is. I have known some pretty ignorant people who were excellent students and some extremely intelligent people who were horrible student. I myself was not a good student, but I think I am relatively intelligent.

I wholeheartedly agree -- grades aren't the only indicator of intelligence for a # of reasons!

Here's Bush's transcript

Was it customary for grades to be hand written on a transcript back then? Is anyone else concerned that most of Bush's grades (including the "highest") was handwritten? Or is this normal?

Re: Those who admit they HAVE a president named BUSH!

It is a good point that it isn't exactly a clear document, but i have no idea what was customary then. In case you're interested the info I quoted re: Bush and Kerry grades was a Boston Globe article.

Bush's grades were such a major issue in the campaign though that I tend to think if there'd been issues with whether the transcript was legit, someone would have been all over it!!

Yes, I work at a college and most of the transcripts from the 50s and 60s are handwritten. I suppose it was easier than typing all of them. Many high school transcripts now are still handwritten. Not the majority of them, but quite a few schools...

Additionally, it is fact that Bush was rejected by UT Law School...unheard of for the child of a famous and well-connected man. But he was such a poor student, and so uncommitted that they did reject. Bush's dad got him into his own alma mater, and since one of my in-laws is on the admissions board at Princeton, I can tell you how that happened $$$$$

I don't think there's a bush fan out there contending he was a stellar student or that his family connections weren't a reason for his entry at Yale! Just pointing out Kerry wasn't any better... something that didn't come out in the campaign bc Kerry refused to unseal the records -- probably bc it would have taken away one of the biggest sound bites against his opponent! At least Bush owned up to it and referred to himself as a C student...

Edited for typo

He was a c student with connections - no one knows what he might have earned on his own merit, I'm sorry, I just don't put a lot of credence into his grades considering his family connections.

I also want to say that the reason I voted for George Bush is because I trust him - I believe he is a man of integrity and faith that places great importance on the value of human life. I trust him to keep us safe and to make the decisions he truly believes are right for our country. ...

In light of recent events, I am really surprised to hear someone say this...

way to go takeout cook! I totally agree, the pro-Bush media often skew the facts to make it seem like there are more people who support him than actually do
