Work invite help - co-workers want to go to the church!

Two of my co-workers who would not be invited to the wedding live very close to the church where we are getting married, and both have said they want to go to the church. I am inviting a few close colleagues and my boss to the wedding and reception. How do I deal with this possible awkwardness? I really can't afford to increase the guest list anymore, but how do you say, no please don't come to the church?

They might just mean to wish you off and go about there day after the your ceremony is over. But if you feel odd about them being there, explain that its a VERY small and private ceremony and although you would be happy to invite them, you would have to explain the extra people to your inlaws. Tell them that both famlies had to skim their list a lot and there would be hurt feelings if more people came from your side.

I agree with Ember.

They probably don't mean it to be an akward situation - they just want to wish you the best.

Re: Work invite help - co-workers want to go to the church!

Thanks! I was just afraid I might hurt some feelings that some people were invited when others were not. I'm sure they would understand, but still thought it might seem awkward when they were there with other co-workers and then weren't coming to the reception. I'm probably making this out to be more than it is

Most people understand how expensive weddings are. How a plate of food can range from $45-250, and times that how many people coming (anywhere from 20-500 people.) plus flowers, bar, dj, limos, etc... I doubt they'll be hurt that they aren't able to attend the reception, they properly understand.

I think they just want to come and wish you well and see your happy moment. You could nicely ask the ones that are invited not to annouce it to the one sthat arent and dont owrry about it. I went to a coworkers church and there were others invited to the reception and I didnt get offended in the least. She was close with the ones she invited and we were just acquantences

I don't think you need to do anything. If people want to wish you well at the church, that's great!! Not everyone expects an invite to the reception.

Re: Work invite help - co-workers want to go to the church!

I have plenty of folks coming to the church that are not invited to the reception.

Mainly, co-workers and sorority sisters, who clearly understand the expenses of a wedding, and know my restrictions for a guestlist.

They asked if they could attend the ceremony, and I said "Absolutely, I'd be honored."

It's only good intentions! Besides, a lot of people who are invited to the reception do skip the church...so it'll fill up nicely!

Don't tell them not to come. I'm sure they won't think anything of it. They probably just want to see you in your dress. Don't stress, people understand how expensive weddings are.

I totally agree. I have quite a few who said they want to come to the church who weren't invited. People know how it is & some are probably glad they were not invited - I don't mean that in a rude way, but it's an expense for the guest as well & sometimes if it's a borderline-close friendship, it can be awkward. So no worries, you should feel honored that people want to come see you!!

Re: Work invite help - co-workers want to go to the church!

I agree with everyone else, I think you should let them come to the ceremony. I've been to two ceremonies now where I wasn't invited to the reception (both co-workers). I didn't feel weird or anything. I just wanted to see the dresses, watch them be married and congratulate them on the way out. But then again, I've always been obsessed with weddings!
