vendor insurance
If the hall requires vendors to have vendor insurance, does that mean that I can't use a student photographer/videographer FMIL knows?

Re: vendor insurance
They most likely will have to have some liability coverage or they won't be allowed in the place.

Some halls will allow it if the vendor signs some sort of waiver. Maybe if you tell them its a friend of the family they will make the exception.

Re: vendor insurance
Perhaps you can buy your own liability insurance? wedsafe offers it for about 185.

FYI - you can not buy insurance that covers someone else. As an example you can not buy insurance for someone else's engagement ring (where you are the beneficiary). You can only buy this coverage if you own the ring. Same rules apply here. A professional has to have his own insurance. In the case of a friend photographing/video your wedding the hall will most likely (they would be crazy not to) require THEM to have insurance. And your friend would be crazy not to have it for their own protection. Imagine someone tripping over their equipment, suing them, they have no business insurance thus they loose their house or have their wages garnished forever. Yes an extreme example but things like this have happened.

Re: vendor insurance
Thank you so much everyone. This is very useful information. I'm confused, though, because I know there are people that have had and recommend student photographers and videographers to keep the cost down and the quality up. As a full-time graduate student myself, I can't imagine how these photography students would have their own insurance. How do people do this in other situations? Am I wrong and students do tend to have insurance?

Re: vendor insurance
It is not always the case that you cannot use a vendor that isn't insured. While policy does vary from place to place, when a hall does allow a non-insured vendor it is the lessee of the space that takes responsibility for that vendor and to cover any costs that may arise out of negligence or suit. So for instance, let's say Aunt Sally does trip over the strobe flash and it falls on her head and is rushed to the hospital and she decides to sue. Because the vendor didn't have insurance, the suit would then fall to you since you were responsible for that vendor.
Before you make any decisions on using a student photographer, check with your hall.

Re: vendor insurance
That's what I was worried about. Thanks so much for all of your input. It's on my list of questions to ask the hall.
