Another car question..Scott? anyone?

We were looking at VWs, and as it turns out they're coming out with a new Passat, so we can get a good deal on an "old" Passat, which wouild make it the same price as a New Jetta.

I'm just not sure what to do..presuming we even decide to make such a huge investment in a car.

Also, do you know about those "driver's Option" programs? Where you make payments for 3-4 years lower than a lease, higher than a finance, and then at the end you can turn it in, pay a balloon payment or refinance the rest. Is there a catch to this? Because if we did this, we'd have pretty low payments for now. it seems kind of ideal because in 3 years, after the wedding, we'll have more money to pay the rest....

And did I mention we have a $500 deposit on an elantra we're supposed to be picking up today?

Re: Another car question..Scott? anyone?

hi mary!!
i'm in a balloon payment, i'm kinda sorry i did this. It's like a smartbuy, I have it for 5 years, and then after that i can turn it in or buy it out, i'm not sure what my buy out price is though, i'm pretty sure it's outrageous.

Why don't you like it?

For this the balloon payment is about 1/2 of the car's value. but at that point we won't be saving for a wedding, so we won't have a problem paing it off in mayb 2 years or so, because you can refinance the rest or keep the current payment going.

Re: Another car question..Scott? anyone?

oh, ok thanks. I find it really confusing. I don't know what the catch is. I guess I'm paying more ofr the car in the end, but not as much more as if I had leased and then bought? I have no clue. As you can all tell I am UTTERLY confused. We were all happy doing the sensible thing buying the inexpensive car and blah blah...but then FH got just as starry eyed over the Jetta as I have been for years (I'm a VW enthusiast - big time. When I was 4 I said my first car would be a Beetle, and it was. And I got hired for a sales support position when I went in to buy my car, because I was so enthusiastic about the car, and trying to convince my dad to buy it for me by any method possible).

But anyway, I'm just SO confused. And between the loaded elantra and the base jetta it's only a $3K difference...which isn't a lot when you consider how much more car you get out of the jetta...but then we're giving up the leather seats and stuff like that..unless we want a $7 difference in price....I'm like in this whirlwind at the moment.

The thing is new cars have MUCH better financing options. And we really haven't found a used car that suited us. The used ones we were looking at were almsot as much as the new elantra, so we said, we might as well get the new elantra and have a full warranty.

I mean the problem with this car thing is that, ok, we have no down payment..but my car ends next month, so as long as the payments are below that, we're fine.. still paying the same amount. If we weren't planning a wedding, we could buy whatever car, no problem. It's just finding any $$ beyond that for the wedding is impossible until something changes. I'm just 100% confused. After all the $$ we basically flushed down the toilet with Doug's old car, comparing it to the maybe $1000 of maintencane I've put it my car (most of it optional) over the past 5 years, it makes a new car seem like a lot less of a worry. Plus if we buy a new car and one that we like, that's it, that's our car for the next 10 years, whereas if we buy a used car or a car we don't really like, we're going to look to trade it in in a few years' time, which will make it cost more in the end....soit's just NOT simple. I mean we went from looking at $4000 used cars to looking at (but of course we can't buy this) $27,000 new cars... It's not simple because everything comes with some price. A used car will need more maintenance, and we ahven't been able to find one that wasn't really epensive of majorly flawed, a new cheap car is great, we're in a new car, cheap..but then we're hoenstly going to look to trade it in, and the car we love is more $$, but we're going to keep it for 10 years. So I just don't feel there's a cut and dry answer. Everyone is giving us different advice. Some people are sayng, just buy the car you like and buy it once and that's it, you don't have to buy another car for 10 years... (I have a 5 year old bug, and I have been determined from day 1 that it will last at LEAST ten years), and then there's the other school of thought which is, you're saving for a wedding, buy what's cheaper, and worry about liking it later. I'm not sure which option is better. I wish D hadn't fallen in love with the Jetta, almost, because at the beginning, he just wanted a car to get form A to Z, which is the elantra, but now he's got the VW fever.

They are coming out with ANOTHER NEW PASSAT????

YUP. In addition to the New Passat, then the New Passat with the chrome and everything, they're now doing a complete redesign, like what they've done with the Jetta. I really thought it was a big mistake, until I saw the new Jetta in person. It definitely grew on me. Doug sat in it and said "WOW" and I thought he was just being silly and then I sat in it and I was like "WOOOOW" Love at first sit!
That's why this is so complicated. If you love the car, you don't mind writing out the checks, if you don't like the car, you really hate writing them out! This is a car we won't mind writing out the checks for!

Re: Another car question..Scott? anyone?

I hated both my Passat and Jetta. The ride was very stiff and I felt confined. I went back to Honda and have an Accord now. I love it.

The smart buys look good in the beginning but read the fine print. I lease every 3 years or so because I don't want to deal with repairs and the possibility of breaking down. I don't mind a continuous car payment for the security.

All wheel Drive is an option.

As for what car you guys are going to buy, it all comes down to what you and you FH want to do. You can ask peoples advice but they aren't going to tell you the answer that you want, only you know that answer.

If you asked me, I would buy the Hyundai. I have a few reasons for this. You said you would keep the car you buy for at least 5 years and 10 years if you liked it. The Elantra's warranty lasts 10 years 100k miles. That means you are covered for 10 years on problems with the elantra. The VW I believe is only 3 years and 36,000 miles.

The Elantra has been around for many years, and the model that is out now has been out for a few years, so all the bugs have been worked out of the car, and the recalls too. The VW JETTA and the NEW Passat are new designs. This is the first year that they have been out, and all of the recalls and bugs in with the cars will be expected to hit this years models and probably next years models too. Don't make the mistake of buying a first year model, you are only asking for trouble. I did it twice, and I should of learned my lesson the first time. It is good that there is a warranty, because the problems were all fixed free of charge, the problem was that I always had to bring the car to the dealer to be repaired. It was just annoying and it wasted a lot of my time.

The elantra, is good on gas, inexpensive to own, reliable, nice looking, and has a good warranty. The quality of the Hyundais is actually up there with Honda and toyota. The body parts that Hyundai uses are actually stronger than the body panels that honda uses.

Now for the balloon payments, or smart buys as most dealers call them. They are basically a lease, and at the end of the lease, you can either choose to keep the car and pay the balloon payment, which you could finance. At the end of the balloon payment you will own the car. Or you could return the car and get something else.

You have to decide what the pros and cons are of both vehicles. You have to think about future finances after you and your FH get married. Are you going to plan on buying a house soon, what the insurance is on both cars, What would be the smarter investment.

I hope I helped you
Scott

Thans so much Scott. This is such a difficult decision! ALso, the thing is if we bought the elantra we wouldn;t want it for 5-10 years, we'd want to dump it after 3 when we could afford the Jetta, so that's why I'm thinking, amybe we should just buy the jetta. So confusing! Also, the hyundai warranty is only 5 years, VW is 4. They both have 10 year powertrain warranty

10 year powertrain is good. 5 year warranty is good too. When you goto sell it in 3 years you could tell the buyer there is 2 years left on the warranty. Big incentive. Whats the price difference with insurance? Whats the difference in price with the monthly payments amongst the two cars? How do you know you will want to sell the car in 3 years? You may like it. Hyundai's now are excellent cars. I know a few people with the elantra and they are very happy overall with the car....and the quality of the car.....Read up on the reviews on msn.com on both cars.

Re: Another car question..Scott? anyone?

What I found out when I bought my new Honda was this......I did the 'smartbuy" thing, I negotiated the payments, and I did a great job negotiating (patting myself on the back!!!), then in the end, you can trade it in, sell it yourself, pay the one big payment
(very big and I'll get to that), or refinance.

What I found while looking through my paperwork is that even though I have low monthly payments, (low for the car), they jack the final payment back up to the original price!!!! So I guess I have to renegotiate if I want to buy the car!!!! Make sure yu check that out......

Well when you add the final payment to the payemtns you make for 36 mos, it always end sup being more, but that's due to interest. I checked out my pyaments and balloon payment and it all seems on the up and up.

Re: Another car question..Scott? anyone?

I love the look of the passat too and my mom owns one, but I have to say that I loath driving it. The blind spots are awful. The way the car tilts up in the back makes it hard to see. I would testdrive it a few times to make sure you are comfortable with it. I still think it is a great looking car with a lot of wonderful features, but IMHO they need to work on the back windows and make them at a better angel. But if it works for you, then great.
