Brides Planning Honeymoons in Maya Riviera

Well, a few people told me to check out malaria risk in Mexico. I never thought about it being a problem there--I was more concerned about Montezuma's.

Anyway, the WHO mentions some risk, so does the Pan American Health Org. Actually, the Yucatan Peninsula is rated as a high risk area for Malaria. Another article I found (a doctor I don't know, less reputable source), noted it's not such a problem in the resorts, but it is a problem in the areas further inland.

Does anyone have more info on this? My doctor is pretty clueless, unfortunately. I feel like I'm being overly cautious, but this isn't something I'd like to catch!

Well we just came back from there and weren't concerned with malaria, but were with Montezuma (as you stated). I'm sure if you don't do anything "too adventurous" where you would be in the jungle (and there are lots) or near lagoons/swamps you should be OK. I think there's a risk everywhere you go...try to prepare yourself as best you can but don't stress over it too much.

Of course this is a serious concern - but over the years, neither myself, nor any of my numerous friends who have made the trip have had any problems, or heard this to be an isuue. BUT, we all stayed at all-inclusive resorts so we were less likely to buy food at local places, or go into the mainland. So in my experiences this has not been an issue.

I went on my HM last month there and I had no concerns. We actually walked through the jungles in Coba as well as real Mayan Villages.

Thanks for the feedback! I was hearing conflicting things about the risk and did not know what to think. We weren't planning any jungle hikes, but I would like to see some of the ruins while we're there. Otherwise, we'll probably be at the resort.

I've vacation there before and we had no problems. The hotels give you bottled water and as long as you stay at a reputable hotel (which I'm sure since it's your honeymoon) the you will have no problems. The area is BEAUTIFUL!
