Re: Where's the best place to buy a new computer?
I'd do a search on bizrate.com & it will list stores & prices. I found Best Buy usually has competitive prices.

Re: Where's the best place to buy a new computer?
My co-worker and I were talking about her computer, which was purchased at Best Buy. They suggested an upgrade, but installed the wrong one, and it caused tons of problems with the computer. Not saying don't use them, but be warned if they offer upgrades.

Re: Where's the best place to buy a new computer?
I got mine from Dell and configured it to certain specifications. The price was pretty good too.
A few years ago we got Gateways at work and they were AWFUL. I had to have major components replaced before the thing was a year old. We recently got new computers (Dells) and they are great!

Re: Where's the best place to buy a new computer?
We bought ours from Best Buy - FH is a software engineer, so he didn't need any help from them and he has the rewards card, so he ended up getting a bazillion coupons from them.

Re: Where's the best place to buy a new computer?
I bought a brand new one right before the wedding from CompUSA (in the circle of Roosevelt Field) I got a flat monitor, and also got roped in to some great rebates offered by both HP and CompUSA. Unfortunately, I did not keep those massive boxes that accompanied the computer in order to cut off the SKUs. CompUSA denied my rebate (I think it was about $80). But HP granted the $100 rebate even without the SKUs.
However, in support of HP, I had some trouble installing my scanner, and I never waited long on the phone to speak with someone.

Re: Where's the best place to buy a new computer?
I've had the best experiences ordering form teh manufacturer - Dell and Gateway. I think they're probabl the bets computers for the $$. And they both have GREAT customer service and great ease of use. I needed to upgrade my ram, and I went o gateway.com and they looked up my computer and one click gave me the exact parts I needed.
ETA: of the two, I think Dell has been the smoother experience, and I dont reccommend bestbuy and compUSA. They'll try to upsell you much more than the dell people will (with dell and gateway you cna design every component online and you wont get suckered into a "package"). Also, at the stores they ahve compaqs and HPs, etc, which in my expoerience and in FH's professional opinion suck azz (that's the technical term). Fh has always buit his own computers, but I didn't want to count on him to fix it so I have the agteway for tech support. One great thing about the gateway is that the case makes it REALLY easy to install and uninstall harware should you ever need to change anything. I blew my HD 4 times (I don't know if it was me or the comp) but it was covered under warranty, and each time they sent me a brand new bigger hard drive. I paid for a 20gig HD when I bought the computer in 2000, and now I have an 80 gig, so it worked out They even sent me a new mouse when i wore mine out.
