Anyone register early due to pressure?

Ever since we got engaged in April, both of our families have been bugging us to register. We just wanted to wait until before the engagement party in September.

I still wait to wait but FH is starting to cave under all this pressure!!!

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

if you put stuff on now people can buy you stuff from the list, that way you won't get any unwanted engagement gifts, but i understand you want to do it closer to the engagment party right?

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

I can understand if you have a large engagement party. We still haven't registered. All we had was an engagement dinner with immediate family. If we had a large engagement party I would've registered to make things easier for guests...however you of course do not have to register for everything because somethings may get discontinued. Maybe focus on a fine crystal or porcelain...whatever tchatchkas you like....otherwise many family members buy the ones they like for you. So if you had your eye on a Lladro Statue or a Vera Wang Bowl...I'd do that now. I'm sure the guest appreciate it. It makes their life easier. I know that If I were your guest I would appreciate it.

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

I registered soon after we got engaged because I just wanted to go shopping and not have to pay for anything! It was fun! FH had the gun and thought if he aimed it at me, that I'd stop talking!

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

We were pressured to register, but it was a great thing. We already have all of our china place settings, all of our silver and some of our crystal. As soon as families knew we were engaged they sent us gifts off of our registry.

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

I got engaged April 24th and registered soon after that. I have already gotten a few things off all 3 of my registries! We are having our official family engagement party on june 12th and I know people have been going to the registries to buy things. It's nice to get what I want, and registering is fun (but exhausting)!

Yes, that and we're living at my parents house now and my mom is complaining about where we're going to put everything. We already rent storage but it's full!

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

FH and I were engaged on Mother's Day, and our wedding is still a little over a year away. We're not having an official "engagement party", but people in FH's extended family were really putting the pressure on us to register, so we did. It's ridiculous...I don't even think any of these people are going to buy us engagement gifts!

Our registry is not even half complete yet. We still have tons of things to pick out, but we've got enough on there to shut everyone up.

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

Me too!!! I have one card from my friend in Florida, and that's it.

I think we're just going to register for a few basic things to shut them up. I think it's funny that FH wasn't caving until HIS family started to pressure him. Mine was doing it for weeks before now.

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

I did it bc my uncle kept hounding me...We have gotten some engagement gifts from our registry...Now that we are in contract with our house, I am updating the registry to include things that we will need! We will be moving into the house prior to the bridal shower, so maybe we will get some as house warming gifts

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

My family suggested that we do it before the e party. They figured that it would be nice to give people a choice if they wanted to get us a gift..besides this way there is a year to hopefully get all the things we need.

Trust me..once you start you will have fun and you can always add later on.

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

Us too....we got engaged in March & will be having our engagement party in July. FH said he really didn't want to register until after the E-party. But people have been asking his mom what we need & if we are registered, so we ended up registering...

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

We registered because we figured that people are going to give us gifts for our e-party no matter what. When I went to register, the woman told us to put vases, candles, and picture frames on because people will buy them regardless. Well, she was right! All of the little things are gone! We also registered for our place settings and cookware. As it gets closer, we'll register for our bedding, towels, etc.

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

our wedding is too far to register. Out of respect for our parents' wishes, we aren't living together until we're married, and as of right now, we have NO IDEA where we'll be living!!!

Our parents don't have the storage space for gifts, and candles and things would be melted/ruined in almost 2 years anyway, right?

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

Oh my God YES!! I have not even decided where I will register as I have all these other things to do!!! I think that we will prolly bite the bullet and do it in August or September as we maybe having the E-party in November (that is if these new dates work out with both sides of the family... OOT In laws make it really difficult to organize anything!)

I'd rather have his parents put their money from the eparty towards my wedding instead but that's another rant for another day.

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

We regitered really quickly b/c of all the pressure..and then the people who were pressuring us didn't exactly rish out to buy us gifts, (slmost a year and a ahlf later, we're still waiting)....but in my family people do register early b/c once you get engaged, birthday gifts, xmas gifts, all registry items
ETA: we mostly got cash engagement gifts so far (we didn't have a party, but we may). Maybe if you just go make a small registry, maybe 20 items in diff price ranges. If you have or can pick your china, that's a great thing to add to the registry.

To give you an idea so far people have bought us

fine china place settings $100 each
Fine china platter $140
8 Party plates- casual china -$65
Casual china trivet -$30
vase $30
decanter set - $50? (this was not on the registry)
coffee pot $40
Lenox snow white and prince charming - $250

So people will want to buy you things in diff price ranges. Also my aunt told me she was buying the the kitchen aid mixer, but I kind fo stalled her and told her to wait until after I was registrered b/c I think she wanted to buy me the $250 one and if she did I would just be returning it for the $400 professional one. Not that I want her to spend the $400, but that I'd rather she buy me something I'd keep for the $250.

on that note, I think registering for a few things in diff price ranges is good because people will want to buy you gifts and if you're not regsitered they WILL buy you just any old thing, and then you have to decide to keep it or return it and risk hurting their feelings. It may be inevitable tog et gifts and not know where to put them, but it's so much better to have gifts you LIKE cluttering your closet

We registrerd immediately for china, silver, and kitchen items, coffer pot, microwave, blender. toaster oven, etc. Staples that don't change much over the years and that people will want to buy. We held off of course on linens and towels although we did register for bathroom accessries b/c I fell in love with a set and if they get discontinued fortuoff will tell me and I'll just buy them or have my mom buy them.

Re: Anyone register early due to pressure?

Well we registered at BB&B last month and NO ONE got us anything. Now we find out from both families that they prefer to buy us "good stuff" at Fortunoff..and since my first post we canceled the Engagement party.

Oh, it never ends!
