Catholic Girls _ Can you get married ona holy day of obligation?
We're postponing the wedding, and I'd LOVE to get married on the Feast of Immaculate Conception (Dec 8th) but I don't know if that's possible.

We're just having an insane amount of financial strain right now for various reasons beyond our control. FH is SO stressed. The way things are, we're practically living paycheck to paycheck and there's no way we'll save the money we need for the wedding. Also, Fh's car needs a LOT of work to pass inspection and so he's been driving around with an expired car since Feb..so it'll take some pressure off and he can get a decent car, and we can breathe a little easier. I think he was going to lose his mind. I don't want to wait another year, it breaks both of our hearts, but we're trying to think of it positively. More time to save, we can buy a car, we can have an e-party, and we won't have to skimp on anything for the wedding. We'll be able to afford whatever we want, whereas before, at that rate we would have just barely been able to pay the balance on the hall. So I don't want to wait, and make this a FOUR year engagement, but it'll be better in the long run

Everything happens for a reason & I am sure it is for the best
Dh's cousin got engaged right after we did (2002) and they are not getting married until 2007.
How has your hall been about changing the date?

usually catholic churchs will not marry you on a holy day - just their policy. but it doesn't hurt to ask

It may actually have to do with Canon Law, but I am not positive.

We haven't gone yet. We had called about a month ago to ask about switching to a Sunday, and they were pretty good about it, but it would only have saved us $10 pp and that wasn't enough, and wasn't worth it to me to do it on a sunday, they were pretty good about it. I'm hoping that since it's so far ina dvance they won't have a problem with it. The sooner the better though.
Maybe we'll go this weekend. I'm kind of sad, but I'm trying to think positively. I'm the kind of person where I'd rather wait and have what I really want, then have it now, and have it not be that good. I could probably find a really inexpesnive hall and cut back all sorts of things, but it's my wedding, why should I have to? Another year alter will put us SO much better off. I'm going back to college in September, and I don't know if I have one or two semesters left, so thats only 6mos - 1 year of me working full time if we get married next Dec, if we wait until Dec 07 I'll have 1.5 -2 years of me working, and I'll be able to use all that money for the wedding, not to mention the stress of finishing my degree will be behind me. I think it's much better this way. Sad, but better. And now I can have a string quartet with no guilt!

Someone told me they had changed it,a nd the fact that it falls ona saturdya night may change it, because after 4pm, a mass is technically for the follwing sunday..I don't know..I was wonderig if anyone knew. I don't know what church I'm going to go to yet, my church doens't return my calls, so I have a few other options.

Well that's why 5pm mass is for Sunday, not saturday. And it's the same thign fi you go to a wedding and it has a mass, if it starts after 4pm or something like that, it counts as your obligation for Sunday. I'll have to ask at my church. Thanks
