I dont know where to begin

A little background, I got married on the 17th of April when I came home from HM, I changed my name with Social Security and then DH and I went to our bank to get a line of credit, since he already owns a home with no mortgage we were going to get a line of credit and do some extentions. The bank ran our credit and while it was not bad there was one thing on my credit that needed to be disputed and one thing on DH credit that also needed to be fix. I had all 3 credit agency copies in front of me. I was able to check over all 3 to make sure everything else that was on my report was supposed to be there. Needless to say we were denied until I fix the problems. Well I went ahead and did the lending tree and was matched up with several banks. I just got off the phone with them and she was going over my credit report there are more than 20 things on my report (negative) that were not on there 2 weeks ago. They are all my DH x sister in laws. I have mortgage leans ( i have never owned a home) school loans, I never went to college. Car loans from 1995, I was 15 and tax leins from them. I am so upset now because she told me it was going to take a long time to get all t his stuff off and meanwhile it only took a period of 2 weeks to get on. Now I dont know if I should change my name back since the X-SIL and I have the same first , middle and last name and this will be an issue for the rest of my life. I dont know what to do and I am just so upset because now we arent going to be able to move foward with the extentsion and any thing else I may have wanted to do.

That's terrible!! I'm sorry I don't have any advice for you (although changing your name back sounds like a good idea!!!!) but I want to say that really s*cks and I hope you are able to find a solution soon!!

That totally sux..

I would definitely look into changing your name back until this can be resolved because this may be an ongoing problem that can be lengthy and costly to fix. I'm so sorry

I am so sorry!!! This is a horrible situation. I am a little confused. You have the same name as your SIL, but your SS# is different. I thought that Credit reports went off of your SS#. I am not an expert, but I would think that if they see that the SS# is different it should be easy to fix.

You should just have it corrected unless you want to use your maiden name the rest of your life. Your SS # is different from hers and it shouldn't take longer than 30 days to have it corrected.

Can't the credit card company confirm it's NOT you with your social security #? There has to be a way to resolve this quickly if it's just mistaken identity!

Not to add more to your misery - but even if you were to change your name back I am not sure that would remove what is now on your credit report. I am not sure though. As for what is on there now I would call an attorney.

The girl I was talking to at the bank said although the credit agencys should go off SS# they never do. Now she said I will have to write letters to dispute but who knows how long it will take. Its just not fair that I have to deal with this. I couldnt wait to take DH last name and now I may not be able to keep it. As she was going down the list with me I was just getting more and more confused bc nothing was mine. At first I think she thought I was lying until I said look at my date of birth, I was born in 1980, tell me what bank would give a 16 year old a mortgage in 96 or a car loan in 95, I'd of been 15. I didnt even have a drivers license yet! I really hope this is not going to a big issue but I have a feeling it will becasue I have her tax liens on my report that she has with my BIL

Sorry this happened to you.

Can you change your name to -

FirstName, Maiden Name, DHLast Name?

Maybe that will stop this from happening again in the future

call equifax. Here is their website. They may be able to help you.

You can also conatct social security. Speak to someone in the fraud dept. They may be able to help. Equifax can put an alert on your credit for now, it will be an annoying process but it can be fixed.

I was thinking of that as well. I dont know I have to call all teh credit agencys and try to get copys and move foward with fixing it. I am going to call my bank and the irs and give them a heads up as well. With things in collections from her I am afraid that they will put a freeze on my acct.

I just thought of something else - can you put a freeze on your SS#? I did that when my wallet was stolen - I understand your wallet wasn't stolen but with a freeze you can't open new accounts until they contact you.
I just thought it might be a better way to differentiate between your and the xSIL.

All you have to do is contact equifax & they will put on alert on all your accounts. Equifax will then contact the 3 major credit card agencies. They can even e-mail you your credit report & you can check it from there & report any suspicious activity.

We just went through this with my husband. He and his father have the same name. DH had credit cards and mortgages on his credit report from before he was born!!! We contacted all the agencies and disputed the claims. They were all removed within 30 days. His credit score jumped up over 70 points with all the items removed. You have to keep on top of it though and it is very annoying.

Thanks everyone. I am gonna try to get in touch with the credit agencys now and see what I can do. I just talked to someone here at work and they said I may need a lawyer for this since our names are exact and I cant get in touch with x-sil to sort through it. im screwed pretty much. But thats my life I guess.

Just take it slowly & relax. I know it's a bad situation but the scary thing is you're not alone!! Please keep us posted!
