XPOST from Parenting: An 05er's preemie baby needs a blood transfusion
I figured NWR might get more traffic than Parenting...
Dooodles had her baby three weeks ago, he's very premature and has a lot of problems (infections, breathing, you name it)
CJ needs a blood transfusion... here is a link to the post.

i am a mom of a preeme and i am o but the only thing i don't remember if neg or pos. or what that cmv is. i posted on the post in hopes she tells me! i will go get tested!. my daughter is now 10 but i still remember how if feels to be in nicu! my prays and hugs go out to them!

i think he can accept O+ and O-, but i dont know what CMV is
i'm B+ and cant donate again until May 24th even if i did match

i had a tranfussion 5 years ago and i am puzzeled by the o neg and pos. but i think you jsut help me ! i too a universal so i guess that makes me o- but i still would like to get tested to be safe and find out what the cmv is!

This describes what CMV is. i think its more or less something that most people wouldnt know they have (b/c it lays dormant) but would greatly affect a premie.

I was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus a few years back and I will go through "active" times with it once or twice a year...I wonder if that knocks me out?

Are there any risks in receiving a transfusion?
As with any medical procedure, blood transfusions carry some risk. There is a remote chance of receiving blood of the wrong type. In addition, several infectious diseases can be transmitted by blood transfusions. Among the viruses that may be transmitted by blood are: human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS; human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV-I); several hepatitis viruses; cytomegalovirus (CMV), and West Nile virus (WNV). However, the very small risk of acquiring such a virus is outweighed by the benefits of a blood transfusion that is needed.
What is cytomegalovirus (CMV)?
CMV is a common virus that causes a mild to unnoticeable infection in healthy people. About half of the adult population in the United States has been infected with CMV. The virus can be transmitted by blood transfusion. Although it is not a problem for most transfusion recipients, it can cause serious disease in patients whose immune systems function poorly, such as premature infants and patients who have undergone tissue or organ transplantation. These patients frequently are given blood that has been screened or processed in such a way as to reduce the risk of CMV transmission

I am A+ and pierced my navel last summer. Unfortunately Id have to wait a year even if I matched. I was a regular blood donor before and will start again after August. Good luck and I hope whoever has the blood type donates.

called my dad he thinks Im O positive too.
I got this all done when I enrolled in college. I wish i knew where my paperwork is but ya know how it is when ya move.
I FM'ed her Im willing to go to the hospital and be checked if she wants.
My twin brothers were 3 months premature.  It's tough

I'm going to find out too what blood type I am..I know Im "O" but not sure if + or - , but being where Donna has been, and losing my child, makes me all the more willing to help. Anyone know where you can go to have blood type tested??

I believe it has to be an exact match, it is the universal donor and can donate to all types, but can only receive from its own exact type. I just wrote on the board, i am O+ and CMV-, hopefully she will let me know!

it knocks you out and i am knocked out too due to medical issues.
Are you sure it knocks you out? Because I got diagnosed with Epstein-Barr a few months ago and the doctor said there's no real risks and that more than half of adults have it and don't even know they do....if you find that it does affect your ability to give blood, pls let me know bc i have never heard of this. Wish I had O and could help. to all of you that are willing!
