Car question: how much would it cost...
How much would it cost to have my front and rear brakes totally replaced?
I got an estimate today and I think its kinda high... they can't cut the rotors, they are completely worn.
How much would it be, ballpark? They are not ABS. (disc and drum, I guess)
TIA!!

Re: Car question: how much would it cost...
Holy crap, he said $500...
The thing that ***** is, I took it in for an inspection today, and since it would fail, he said to bring it back tomorrow. He didn't charge me for today, but will just do it all tomorrow, so I feel like I have to go back to him...
Would brakes + replacing a belt + inspection be $500 or am I about to get ripped off?

it depends on what type of belt and what type of car you have.

Re: Car question: how much would it cost...
depending on the type of belt and since you need new rotors? and brakes I definitely could see it being that much. I wouldnt be surprised if atleast half of the charge is for labor.
Is there anyways you could stop somewhere else just to see how much they charge.

Maybe around $250
Brakes PLUS rotors will cost you a lot more than $250 buks... hell just the parts alone I think would run more than $250.

Re: Car question: how much would it cost...
I'm going to see if I can call my dad's mechanic and see what he says.
I feel better now though... at least I know it's not totally outrageous.
S u c k s though, I really liked that $500...
Figures, I get it inspected, figuring how much could it possibly cost, 50 maybe? and it costs me a whole lot more... but better fix them now than have an accident, so I guess it's a good thing that I had to inspect it!!
Thank you so much for your help!!

Re: Car question: how much would it cost...
Well... Rotors could easily run you $150 buks for a set of four. Pads are about $70 for a set of four. Thats $220 right there. Inspection is another $35.
I would just take the car to another mechanic to check out. You may only need front brakes replaced.
Its a little strange that you would need all four brakes replaced at the same time, when the front ones are supposed to wear much quicker than the rears.

Re: Car question: how much would it cost...
Inspection is $40. If you need a timing belt, that alone can be $300 plus. If it is a regular fan belt or an a/c belt it should cost less than $100 to replace from a mechanic. As far as brakes go....New pads, and cutting the rotors on the front should cost around $125, and the same for the rear. Are they cutting the rotors or replacing the rotors? If they are replacing the rotors then dj pill is right....It should be more, but I dont see why they wouldnt just cut the rotors

Re: Car question: how much would it cost...
I think he said that the rotors were so far worn that they can't cut them anymore, and they need to be replaced.
DJ-- I had my front brakes done a while ago, so I guess they could be worn out at the same time
There goes my tax refund!!!!
Thank you so much!

Re: Car question: how much would it cost...
Sometimes the rotors get warped to the point where cutting them won't get the job done.
I still think $125 is a tad on the cheap side for a rotor shave & pads including labor. Who quoted you this price?
If you already had the front brakes done... i would make sense that you need them done again (and you need the rears done now).
How many miles does the car have?
Can you believe my FW had a shytbox Hyundai Elantra that had 80k plus miles on there when she sold it and she never got the brakes replaced? She actually brought the car to Firestone to have them checked out... and even they said point blank she doesn't need new brakes and that her brakes are fine.

Re: Car question: how much would it cost...
Wow, your FW is lucky!!!!
I have about 72K on it... I think I have only replaced the brakes once before... but maybe I did the front ones twice already. Yeah, twice sounds about right.
I guess I'm hard on the brakes out here in Long Island (grew up in Queens where you couldn't go all that fast anyway because of all of the traffic!!)
I have a friend that is SO hard on his car... he has maybe 10K miles on his car and he has already had the brakes done once, and TWO new sets of tires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's nuts!
