How many people rented their first year of marriage?
Just curious. FI and I would really love to buy a co-op or condo when we get married, but are prepared to rent if it becomes nescesary

We rented for the first year. We closed on our house about 6 weeks before our 1st anniversary.

Its ok if you have to rent ya know. There is nothing wrong with it.
In fact... renting for a year or two is sometimes better than buying a house or co-op for a year and then having to sell.

Re: How many people rented their first year of marriage?
We got married in June 2004, and just closed on a house - so we rented for a little less than a year after getting married. Thought it would be too stressful to buy a house and plan a wedding at the same time. We also wanted to take some time after the honeymoon to relax before stressing about finding a house. We got lucky though bc we found a house very quickly once we started looking.
Best of luck to you!!

Re: How many people rented their first year of marriage?
We are renting a house and got married in Nov. We close in l a week and a half I think renting a house was so much better then an apartment for us because now we know what we are in for as far as bills when we own our own home.
It was very easy for us to save because our rent is only $1500 plus utilities

I agree. I hate when people say that renting is throwing your money away. DH and I have been renting for 8 months, and he was renting for a year before that (Before that he owned a condo) and we have saved plenty of money.

Re: How many people rented their first year of marriage?
We are renting for the first year and we hope to have a house by our first year anniversary.
The way you save money - Right now we pay rent and that's it. If we had a house, we'd be buying a new front door, new fridge if it broke, new boiler, you'd want to wallpaper, re-tile, etc. I THINK and again, I don't know for sure, but I think you can save more in an apartment because you don't have any unexpected expenses (for the most part). And we weren't ready to make a commitment like that right away - to have thousands of dollars sitting in the bank to go to a new "something" in the house. If something breaks, our landlord pays for it. We broke it out dollar for dollar, and it made sense for us to rent first and save money, plus we were thinking of leaving LI (now we're not! ). Good luck and just do what's right for you!

We have been married 12 years in June but we rented for 2 years, then leased my parents house for a year, then bought their house.

Re: How many people rented their first year of marriage?
We did. we are just now waiting for the seller of the house we are trying to buy to send the contracts back to our attorney. ::::fingers crossed:::
We figured out that what we spent in rent actually exceeded what we put down as a deposit on this house (we got first-time buyer privilages) by about $7,000. Plus we love having a lot of pets - which is super hard while renting, and we need a bit more privacy at this point.

Re: How many people rented their first year of marriage?
I've been renting for 9 years, DH moved in with me. We are now in the process of purchasing a co-op, once we resolve an issue with the building. I wish I would have thought about buying a few years back when the apts. in my neighborhood were less than $100K for a 2 bedroom as opposed to the now asking price of $300-400K! I could have made a nice chunk of change and maybe we'd be able to buy a house instead

I know what you mean! What is the rush? Can't i just plan a wedding and not have to worry about closing costs too? What happened to getting married and the buying a house after a few years? What pressure we have!
