I need dog help...Please experienced pet owners come in...

Do your dogs ever bite you (out of anger)?

Do you lose trust for the animal? Can it be gained back?

How can we change this behavior?

Dog schools? Do they work? Are they expensive? Can you suggest any?

I need some help. I'm very sad.

We never had this problem. Chewie just bit when he was teething.

That's never happened to us either, maybe you can take him or her to a specialist and see what they tell you. I'm sorry.

Out of anger?? Never!

What happened? Something must've happened where the dog felt threatened... was food involved? Also what kind of dog is it?

Yes there are things that can be done and you probably can reassert yourself over the dog again, but it depending on what happened is how you decide how to go about it.

It was the middle of the night. She (9 month old shih-tzu) was on the table eating bread from the bread box.

If it is biting out of anger i would definately suggest a trainer...
PetCo has classes and/or you can ask your Vet

Re: I need dog help...Please experienced pet owners come in...

So, does anyone know why she might do this? Is it because she's not trained well? Is it because she's been spoiled? What is it??? How can it be fixed?

I would need to know when she bit and what the situation was. I have been "bitten" by one of my dogs, not seriously, when trying to take a bone from him. I didn't handle it right and the dog was just trying to keep the bone. He didn't try to bite me, he was just reaching for the bone.

Re: I need dog help...Please experienced pet owners come in...

Kelly, I'm sorry!!

We had a problem with Larry David big time about a month or so after we got him. Over a sock . We immediately called a trainer after that and she helped immensely. She travels to you and the evaluation is free (I felt bad and gave her $20 for gas money). Anyway, I think it's worth a call - she can tell you what you need to do to control this.

Don't worry, she's still really young - even if this is bad habit/temperament/training, it can be fixed.

She was on the kitchen table in the middle of the night. She did not listen when she was told to: "get down"...
(She 'knows' she's not allowed on the table.)
She was eating bread out of the breadbox
She started snarling like crazy. She was removed from the table (and 'punished' by being left alone in another room) from behind, so as not to allow her to bite.
Then this morning, she was chewing on the cover of a plastic milk carton. She snarled like crazy again when it was tried to be taken from her...And that is when she bit! She's so bad.

She thinks she's a cat. She climbs. Ever see a little dog climb??? Well, she does. She leaps too... She even gets up on the big sleigh bed.

Ah...okay. Well two things are happening. 1 - she is still a puppy and immature in many ways. She obviously didnt know she's not *supposed* get up on the table and eat bread from the bread box. It's good that she's young though because it means you can break her of this habit.

2 - She seems to be possesive with food and you need to enforce dominance over her in food situations otherwise she'll continue to behave this way around food.

I'm not a professional so I do recommend you seek some help or at least do lots of reading but I can tell you what has worked for us.

With our 90 lbs Bull Mastiff, I would not tolerate this behavior so thank goodness DH trained her very well in this situation. I could stick my hand in her food dish while she is eating and she wouldn't bat an eye. What we do is that when she is fed, the bowl of food is put down on the ground by her and she is not allowed to dig in until we say so. We trained like this since she was a puppy. We make her wait and do various tricks and she is not allowed to touch the food until we give the command. This way she knows who is charge of the food in the house.

Because of this training, she knows she is not supposed to eat ANY food unless we say so. So, when she does manage to find food somewhere and eat it, if we catch her, she immediately knows she is wrong.

Of course, part of this is your fault. You can't leave food within the dogs reach. As "well trained" as our dog is, DH left my small bag of chips on top of the kitchen counter last night, far back enough that he though it was safe. Needless to say, I found the shredded pieces of the bag all over the floor this morning, not a chip spared.

Well, when we first got Max from the shleter, we had to put a child lock on our garbage because he was very food obsessive/posessive. Take away any possible temptations.

Does she have full range of the house overnight or is she kept in the kitchen?

Only the bathroom is blocked off because she does bad things in there too.

Re: I need dog help...Please experienced pet owners come in...

It sounds like she has some aggression towards what she believes are her possessions. It also sounds like she doesn't respect you as the "alpha" dog of the "pack". I think some training will definately help. You are probably want to work on her food aggression so she learns that a human hand is not a bad thing when it comes to her food. That is relatively easy to work on. Get some small treats and sit on the floor with her food bowl. Let her watch you put a little treat in the bowl and then let her have it. Praise her when she goes and eats. Work your way up to keeping your hand in the food bowl and letting her take the treat from your hand while it is there. She will eventually associate the good food and praise with your hand so your hand won't be threatening.

I have a dog that will scoot up on the table too. I make sure all the chairs are pushed in so he has no way of getting up there. Next time you find her doing something wrong like that...startle her will a load noise...coins in a can, loud hand clapping, rolled newspaper against something...once you have her attention...tell her "DOWN" until she gets down. Once she gets down, praise her for listening no matter how long it takes. You want her to associate listening to commands with positive praise.

Good luck!

By the way, she is young and training will really help you with this situation. I think she will be a great dog.

Figure out where she can be confined and NOT get into trouble. When I first got Hershey, I gave her full range and came home to a hole in my couch, a dog bed down to bits of foam and all my magazines & a check the landlord slipped under my door turned into confetti!!! So for a while she was confined to a foyer that had her food and a towel to lay on ... nothing to get herself into trouble over. As she adjusted and calmed down, she got more & more space.

I would also suggest crate training for her. It is an excellent way to train dogs and it gives them their own space.
