Greek Brides Thread

Hey girls, I've realized a couple Greek Brides still posting in the 04 board. I thought it would be a good idea to start one on BHB for questions, ideas, and suggestions.

Just wanted to know what you have gotten/or plan to get your koumbari?

Re: Greek Brides Thread

i wish i could have a big greek wedding but i dont know how to! I dont know any of the traditions and i have never been to a greek wedding. we are getting married in the catholic church as of now, but we are also trying to find a greek priest to come to the ceremony too. trying to find an italian/american/greek wedding band is also very difficult... i will be reading this thread to get some ideas on greek traditions to incorporate --- thanx!

Re: Greek Brides Thread

I hope we can all be of some help. If I hear anything about a band/dj or priest I'll let you know. I also thought you might to read this on the wedding tradition.

Re: Greek Brides Thread

Your koumbara/koumbaro has to be Greek Orthodox... this doesn't necessarily need to be your maid of honor or best man, but it could be.

Re: Greek Brides Thread

Hello future Greek bride!

Just to chime in a second. My DH is Greek Orthodox, I am Italian Catholic. We were married in the GO church (St. Paraskevi's in Greenlawn - just beautiful I might add)

My matron of honor and bridesmaid aren't Greek - DH's BM and ushers weren't Greek either.

We actually had DH's aunt (his godmother) be our koumbara -

It doesn't matter what religion your wedding party is, but you MUST have a practicing Greek Orthodox person as your koumbaro or koumbara. They will require a letter from their parish verifiying they are a member of their particular church

Good Luck ladies! It was truly a learning experience for me since I'd never even BEEN to a Greek wedding before I was actually married!

They will stand with you up on the altar, but don't necessarily need to be dressed like a bridesmaid or anythign like that. The only requirement ist hat they are Greek ORthodox and that they will take a special part int he eremony (crowning and exchanging of the rings)

No, the koumbaro or koumbara doesn't have to be in the wedding party at all .. they serve a very important role in the ceremony, however, and will be up at the altar with you and your BM/MOH during the entire service.

DH's aunt wasn't in our wedding party - she wore a pretty gown and a corsage to show that she was "important" in our ceremony .. but whomever you pick doesn't actually have to be a member of your wedding party.

HTH!

Edited to add: to help you visualize, here is a picture of our koumbara (DH's aunt, in the red dress)

In this part of the ceremony, she held the ribbons joining our crowns as we circled the altar. My matron on honor (in lavendar) held my train and our best man kept his hand on DH's shoulder.

Its a team effort

Our Koumbara ordered our crowns last weekend, FH & I went with her because she wanted us to pick out what we liked. She also ordered the large candles for church. We went to Astoria, we looked at a few places before finally ordering.

Re: Greek Brides Thread

My DH is Greek so we had a Greek Orthodox ceremony. Everything was beautiful my only regret is that I did not get to experience reciting vows to one another. I'm thinking of have a vow renewel (not really renewal since they were never actually said) for our 5 or 10 year anniversary.

P.S. Ladies Anastacia's on Northern Blvd. on the border of Bayside and Flushing has lots of nice Greek stuff and gorgeous Stephanas (crowns).

ETA: We gave our Koumbaro a Movado Elliptica watch.
