Registering question: Fine china vs. finer, less-expensive dinnerware

Ok....here's my dilemma...

I registered for fine china. $110 per setting. I have been re-thinking this decision. A lot of people are telling me I will never use it and it's a waste of money. They also said since it's so expensive, I won't get all the extras and might not even complete my 12-place setting.
So I have been thinking...maybe I should register for "in-between" china....a step down from fine china and a step above casual everyday dinnerware. Something nice that I can use for entertaining, but not for everyday use.

SO....keep the fine china or switch it to finer casual dinnerware????

I didn't vote on one. But, do you think you will do more entertaining for big sit-down dinners, or you will keep it to a smaller group of 4-8 people? If you think you won't have 12, then only get 6-8 sets and then get another set of the more casual china.

I put 8 sets of fine china and 8 sets of simple but pretty everyday china, but I also have an older, complete set of china that I got for a steal from an antique store, so I don't really needmore, but I love the pattern, so I got it.

Come to think of it, I really didn't help, did I!?


ETA: If nothing else, it will look pretty in your china cabinet, if you get one! lol

i registered for fine dinnerware, that would look great for entertaining but that i could also use for everyday. fine china is super expensive, and most people i know have not gotten their whole set for their shower/wedding. if you are really attached to the idea of having china for the china cabinet, then i say keep what you've got. otherwise, i'd go with the dinnerware.

I changed the china on my registry to a nice stoneware type. Everyone told me they never use theirs and in my heart I knew I wouldn't either - I'm not a formal entertainer!

I say forget the fine china too, I personally think its a waste especially if you don't think you get all the pieces you want.

How about a buffet service? I'm way too much of a worry wort to own fine china. I'd worry about it being scratched or worse yet, broken. So I registered for a dinner and dessert buffet set. Might be worth a look!

I think you should register for your Fine China. At my Bridal Shower, I got all ( 12 )
5 pieces place settings. Then I got from someone who could not attend and they send it to my house, the coffeemaker, the creamer and the sugar one as well. I already had my Every Day Use which I did not register for and less expensive dinnerware as well.
I'd definitely register for it. You might get lucky just as I did.
And I just have to get my soup plates and the Oval platter. You can always use your Fine China for special occassions and the Holidays.

My DF wondered why we needed to register for good china too. I thought about it and said how will we know that we are eating a special meal, holiday, celebration, family event and make it more special? By having the good stuff I feel it will make the event more memorable.
In my parent's house we have two sets of fine china plus the regular stuff. Both good patterns get used. We have the good stuff for the holidays and the super good stuff that is only used for things like having DF's family over for the first time after we got engaged, and other extremely important events. I think it is a nice tradition. Besides I am not going to want to spend $ on it later when I will really want it.

I really think its a personal preference. I personally am looking forward to hosting dinner parties or hosting holidays in which I would use my china (which is also $110). I happend to chose a pattern that will coordinate with my mothers fine china as well as HIS mothers' china. Eventually I'll be entertain....for all of you with all our china! (I also registered for sterling silver...because I LIKE polishing silver. No joke!)

I am going with the nice dinnerware b/c everyone I spoke to said they never use their fine china and I have seen some really beautiful dinnerware which can be dressed up at a table to give the look of fine china. Who would notice anyway?? I really think it's how you set your table.

I am not registering for fine china...Instead, I am registering for a beautiful set of Christmas dishes from pfaltzgraff...The pattern is called Winterberry and I figured that I can use them all winter!! I knew I wouldn't get much use out fine china and I knew that I would get plenty of use out of this set!!!

I registered for fine china ($130 a place setting) and I got all of it. At first I didn't even want it b/c I have no where to put it and know I wont use it right now but then my sister talked me into it. I mean I know eventually down the line when I have a bigger house and room for a china cabinet I will definitly want to display it & use it when we have company.
And once we are settled in a house there is NO WAY I will shell out that much money for china!!
Put both on your registry!!! whatever people buy they buy!! you can always exchange/return after the shower when you see exactly what you got.

We were having the same dilemma and decided against the $110 per setting china pattern that I really loved. Instead we registered for an in between pattern. Something that was still very nice looking and will be great for holidays, but would not cost an arm and a leg! For the number of times I will use it, it just did not seem to make sense to me for people to spend that much $. Friends of ours got married last year and registered for beautiful china but they only got a few settings. So then they were stuck with going out after the wedding and purchasing the rest of the set. I was worried about that happening and did not want to be stuck in that situation. She wishes that she did not register for it to begin with. A year and a lot of $$ later they still have not taken it out of the box. Besides, I don't want to get china and be all worried about someone breaking a $50 plate at thanksgiving dinner!

I know you really want the fine china. Go for it and like an above poster said you may be surprised and get it all.
