What do you choose first? The hall or the date?

Ok. I am taking a break from the wedding planning (although I haven't done much - just making lists and things of tips from these boards) until the end of May when we'll really begin to plan. But....

I want to know what you did - did you pick a date out first and then choose your hall based on if that date was available, or did you choose the hall and then pick whatever date was available and/or at the right price?

Well, I decided on the hall and HAD to be flexible enough to see what dates were avail. in June or July since that was the only time we could really get married. ( we will be engaged less than a year before we get tie the knot.)

It depends on your schedule, your jobs, etc. We picked our date because I'm a teacher and could not do it during the school year. Some people pick a date that is in the off season. Some people love a hall, and will take whatever's available. So you and your FH really need to decide on that together.

when you visit each hall, you'll tell them around when you want to get married, and they'll tell you their available dates. When you decide on which hall, you'll pick one of the available dates.

We chose the hall and went with whatever available date they had in May. Thank goodness they had a cancellation for my date so I got a lucky price break.

We had a couple of weekends in mind, but actually the church decided the date for us. There were only 2 times available on the weekends we wanted, and one was more desirable for us than the other. Once we booked the date with the church, we booked the hall.

This actually made it easier for us, b/c when we called halls, we knew exactly what date and time we wanted and they could tell us if it was available, and many of the places gave me a ballpark price or a price range for that date and time over the phone.

We had a specific date in mind already when we went to talk to the church. We still haven't booked a hall yet.

We chose a couple dates that worked for us and then looked at halls.

You should go with a day of the week in mind and a preferred month but unless it's super important to you to have a specific date, I wouldn't worry about it. My hall for example, only had 2 Saturdays available between June and July (this was back in Jan '04 when I booked for July '05). I waited a week to decide and they were down to one Saturday, which obviously is the one I got!

we chose the date and got lucky that my hall still had it available (we got the last room and it was the room we wanted). then we confirmed with the church that they were available that day.

We knew we wanted fall - preferably October - and when we found the hall we loved, they had one October date left - so that is how we got our date.

The date, made sure the church was available first and picked halls from there....not the way most do it but the date (has significance) and church was more important to us.

We picked a time of year (July or early August) and then visited halls and checked availability. I think most people go with a definite date, but I would just pick a timeframe unless you have reasons for choosing a certain date. It's good if you can be flexible--then you might get your dream location.

Came up with a few dates, booked the church then the hall.

i picked the hall, and we were flexible with the date (had a few in mind and one eventually worked out.)

Yes pick the Hall first and see what the hall has avialable and base your date on that!

I actually picked 2 or 3 dates that I liked and hoped that the hall had them available and they did!

You have enough time that you can probably do both. When we went we had a date in mind, and it was available at every hall we looked at...so it worked out fine. Maybe it's better if you don't wait until may to book the hall and book it ASAP so you get to choose. If you don't already ahve a date solidly in mind, then I guess pick the hall first!

We picked the month.
Then we picked the hall.
Then we took the last day they had available in June.

we just knew a saturday in may..
hall had 2 saturdays available, called the photographer i wanted, told him both dates, and he was only free on one of the dates, and thats the date we booked.

we picked the date first, but went looking at halls with an open mind. We looked so early we did not have a probleming getting the date we wanted
