Nice vacation/wedding spots, south, within driving distance?

As some of you already know, we're having a destination wedding. A small group of people, intimate, yada yada yada.

We originally thought Florida, but someone that is very close to me is uncomfortable flying, and plane tickets will be a financial burden on FSIL and her DH - they struggle every month. So we're now looking into someplace within driving distance - the weather doesn't matter, FH is a teacher and will be off in the summer, Feb, April, etc - we have plenty of date options for 2006.

Anyone been to Ocracoke Island? (north carolina) - I've heard great things.

Myrtle beach is too commercial for us, florida is too far - please offer whatever you've got!
Thanks!!

Wrightsville Beach, NC. It's in the Outerbanks - check out that whole region.

I've been to Ocrakcoke Island (Outerbanks, rt) it's very nice, but a little windy LOL

If you choose someplace like that, be VERY mindful of hurricane season- Outerbanks usually get slammed.

there are some nice places in VA to try, but may I suggest you also look north- especially to Vermont. there are so many beautiful places, all within about a 6 hour drive.

A friend was married in Vermont in July (it was beautiful), so if you are interested, I can see if I can get some info from her.

Good luck

EXCELLENT info! Please forward any info you have on that Vermont wedding - could be very nice- although we were interested in a beach wedding.

Definitely! I am trying to convince FH that we should go on a vacation this summer to Outerbanks/Emerald Isle. When I was younger we used to vacation at Summer Winds Condos down there - it was perfect (sun, beach, pool, etc).

Check out

You might want to consider Richmond, VA or Charleston, SC. They both have a great southern feel. We went to a destination wedding in Charleston and had a wonderful time - we still talk about it all the time.

If you're considering Vermont, how about New Hampshire?

We went to a lovely wedding here in the fall.
Inns at Mills Falls . My friends got married in a tiny chapel a few miles away and held the reception at the hotel ballroom.

What about The Sagamore in Lake George? I think someone on LIW is getting married there.

ooh that is an option - we both went to school upstate Albany and Cortland.

Anyone remember who the Sagamore bride was?

Although, the more and more I think about it, I have my heart set on waterfront property - I'll check that Sagamore link!

eta: I just checked out the Sagamore - WOW that place is gorgeous, but its way out of our price range. The site quotes $125-165pp.

We'd like a casual beach wedding, with a nice restaurant that will accomodate a DJ to follow.

We went to Baltimore one Saturday just for the night. I think it was a 5 hour drive. We went to the inner harbor and had dinner and walked around, there was enough to do/see just for the day that we were there.

No prob. Here's another option I just thought of. My FSIL got married in Nantucket. She had her wedding at the Harbor House which isn't anywhere near the price of the Sagamore. If you're having a more casual and smaller wedding, she actually did the clambake the night before at The Brante Point Inn. It was buffet style but HUGE lobsters. It was great atmosphere and that was only $70 a head. Here's the link if you want to check it out.
