Nice vacation spots, south, within driving distance?
Sorry, this is kinda wedding-related, but I'm really interested to get some opinions from the people I talk to everyday!!!
As some of you already know, we're having a destination wedding. A small group of people, intimate, yada yada yada.
We originally thought Florida, but someone that is very close to me is uncomfortable flying, and plane tickets will be a financial burden on FSIL and her DH - they struggle every month. So we're now looking into someplace within driving distance - the weather doesn't matter, FH is a teacher and will be off in the summer, Feb, April, etc - we have plenty of date options for 2006.
Anyone been to Ocracoke Island? (north carolina) - I've heard great things.
Myrtle beach is too commercial for us, florida is too far - please offer whatever you've got! Thanks!!

This probably isn't much closer than Florida in terms of driving, but my cousin got married on St. Simon's Island, in GA. It was beautiful there, and not very well known.

What about historic Cape May, NJ? I went there one year in October and it was beautiful. We stayed at this little hotel and it was so quaint - and they have a room available for wedding receptions. The whole town is just so cute.....

Re: Nice vacation spots, south, within driving distance?
all great suggestions - I traveled a lot w/ my family as a kid, and FH hardly ever did.
We want to get married somewhere that we've both never been, so it's new to both of us.
Please keep this thread alive, I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts!!
THanks again guys

I second Cape May. We went there in the summer and it was so beautiful - very historic, not really any chain restaurants or stores, so it is still has an old-town feel to it.

Re: Nice vacation spots, south, within driving distance?
My brother and SIL got married in Little Switzerland, NC - it's in the Blue Ridge Mtns and it was beautiful - it's within driving distance, but still a hike but I can't tell you how wonderful it was. They had it at a place called the Switzerland Inn and it was great. All the guests stayed there and the people who ran the place were wonderful to work with (so says my brother and SIL.)

But you know they could still drive down or even take the train. I know it 's hard not to be able to have everyone that you wish there, but you have to do what's best for the both of you. Unfortunately, that's one of the cons of having a destination wedding.

Re: Nice vacation spots, south, within driving distance?
I have to second hilton head. it's a very small island (when we were there my parnets walked the perimeter one day) and it has a really down to earth beachy feel. it's a big vacation spot, but it's not as commerical as myrtle beach. it's a lot of small resoirts on the water. They have a BEAUTIFUL area called harbor town I believe that is just so pretty. We stayed I think at the HH beach and tennis club or someting...it was in someone's time share and it was SO nice. it's a HIKE though, it's almost in georgia
Also, have you considered Baltimore? I LOVE baltimore. It has so much character, and the harbor area is JUST GORGEOUS with really nice waterfront dining, etc. It's also pretty close, under 4 hours!

ooh I alos love cape may. I've been wanting to spend a weekend with FH there. We discovered it actually a long time ago. I was driving down with him and his aprents t philly to get his ID card and books before school started freshman year and they blew out a tire, so we had to get off the turnpike, and I just LOVED cape may!

Annapolis MD? It's historic and beautiful, and Ego Alley is fun with all the big yachts. Maybe you guys could rent a yacht and have the ceremony and reception on that?

I know FSIL and her DH could drive down, but they REALLY depend on their paychecks (very very poor planning), and missing work would really be damaging for them.
FH and I discussed it last night, and I've been to Key West, and all over Florida. The sensitive side of him wants to "start a new life" together in a brand new place - brand new for BOTH of us.
Also, our small guestlist includes just parents, siblings, aunts/uncles and their kids, and my grandparents. Believe it or not, that's about 40-50 people. My aunt will not fly, and for her to purchase airfare for her 3 kids is too much...
everyone's excited that we're not doing the "typical" LI wedding, but we're trying to keep it "within reason". Also can't choose something too close, 'cause it would give more relatives a reason to want to be there - and we don't want 'em! My parents have a guest list of 150+, his parents have 100+. and that doesn't include any of our friends! That is DEFINITELY not us.

Re: Nice vacation spots, south, within driving distance?
We just got my mom & dad a gift certificate to a historical hotel in Cape May, NJ. I've heard great things about the place.
What about Newport, RI? I went to a beautiful wedding there. They had a tent outside of a historical home on the water and did a clambake.

Re: Nice vacation spots, south, within driving distance?
all great ideas - not to sound dumb, but Cape May NJ IS on the water, but it's not a "beach", is it?
I would really really like a beach wedding.
Anyone have any specific North Carolina area suggestions? Outer Banks hotels? etc?
