Finished one major project (jewelry boxes for girls)

So, I was going to get them each a customized jewelry box, but with the number I needed, it just wasn't going to happen unless I hit the lotto hehehe

So I picked up an assortment of wood boxes at ACmoore and Michaels, some stain, some brushes and a gloss stain finish and viola...

(there's on that's missing, but it will be just like the "flower" shaped on in the lower left, but with an E, not an S)

I hope they like them and don't think they're ugly

Your jewelry boxes are lovely! Bet its a relief to be almost done with that. I haven't finished shopping for my ladies yet but I only have 3.

thank you! I was beginning to think people thought they were really ugly.

the little one's are for the little girls and the larger one's for my 2 MOH's and my 2 BM. It is a relief to be done with them, now I just have to get all the other stuff I got them together and packaged to go :)

Re: Finished one major project (jewelry boxes for girls)

thank you girls You really made me feel SO much better!!!

And if anyone is interested in doing a project like this, it's really cost effective. I was figuring out my cost last night, when I was trying to go to bed and I was like, damn, I did good!!!

4 large boxes - $1.50 each = $6
7 small boxes - $.99 each = $7
stain & finish - $13
brushes - $5
(plus the brushes and the stain I'm using on other projects!)

Total: $31

So they come out to about $2.80 a piece! And of course, they're made with LOVE and that's priceless

hahah I'm such a dork!

Re: Finished one major project (jewelry boxes for girls)

those are great!!! i LOVE the ones with the flowers ( looks like a daisy??) on them! i might have to copy off of you for my girls, if thats ok we're doing a "daisy" theme for the wedding... the invitations have daisies on them, and the girls will be carrying daisies in the wedding... did you add the flowers onto them like you did the letters? or did they have the flower already and you just painted them white?? hmm... guess i know where i'm goin after work today

we're doing daisys too!

the flowers came on those boxes already. I simply stained them like I did the others, then went back in with a white stain and highlighted just the (daisy) flowers. then I put the finish on after that.

You can definitely steal the idea, that's why I shared!

hi! a couple more questions for ya how big are they? just trying to figure out what to put i them also... did you use two different color brown stains? it looks like the top is a lighter brown than the rest... or is that just the way it came out in the pics?

the square one with the flower measures -

5 3/4" on each side and the height is 2 3/4"

the oval and the 6 sided one's are approximately the same size (same height) but just different shapes.

I'm putting the jewelry that I had custom made for each girl, inside the boxes. Well first I'm going to buy pretty tissue paper, then place the jewelry on top of that.

stains - I bought 3 stains actually, but one of them (special walnut) I hated, so I didn't use that on these boxes.

dark walnut -
red mahogany -

the little boxes got the dark walnut, and the red mahogany, followed by another layer of the dark walnut.

the large boxes - the floral area got a light coat of the red then a light coat of the dark walnut. The sides got 2 coats of the red, followed by two coats of the dark walnut. Then I went in with a white stain (it came in a pen, so it was really easy to apply) and highlighted the large flower.

then I finished all of them with a clear satin stain - one coat

Re: Finished one major project (jewelry boxes for girls)

ps. I also wrote inside each box, a special message to each of the girls. A thank you of sorts with a small poem :)
