Re: Question about a new kitty coming into your home....

I've had my cat for 15 years (15 looooooong years ).
We decided this November to get a kitten - but I was terrified of how my cat would react because he doesn't deal with change well...and he HATES other animals.

I had read that you should keep them apart for a while before introducing them for the first time, and the place we adopted her from told us to keep the kitten in a small room, such as a bathroom, while she got used to us.
So, it worked perfectly...we kept the kitten, Scout, in the bathroom for just under 3 weeks.
Gunnar, the old guy, had his run of the co-op, as usual, but wasn't allowed in the bathroom.
He had no idea she was even around.
After about a week, we would take Scout out and let Gunnar see her - not close....just from afar.

Then after about a week and a half, we let Scout out to run around WITH SUPERVISION. When we left, she went back in the bathroom, but while we wer ehome, we would let her out for an hour or two so they could get acquainted.

Gunnar hissed maybe three times, and then took to her right away. I think it helped that she was so much smaller, because he felt he could still dominate her.

After a few days of letting her out supervised, we decided to let her out for a whole night....and when nothing happened, we knew that they were fine with each other and we let her out permanently.

Gunnar and Scout are now madly in love with each other and have a great time together.
Time is key
So is patience
Good Luck!!

awww thankyou so much
I'm just nervous about this
the baby is about 2 months old and Ike is about 18 months old. We took Ike to see him for a second earlier and he wanted to go the other way!

So it's going to take some time
Ike usually runs the house as well

give them time...and eventually they will get used to each other.
they may not love each other....but they'll learn to live together.
hopefully, they'll learn to love each other though
