Please help me interpret this invitation...are these people already married? or, are we invited to an e-party?

I assumed it was for an E-party because we just had this couple over for lunch a few months ago and they didn't say anything about plans for marriage. The guy is one of DH's childhood friends.

We just got this invitation from his parents. It was printed on a laser jet, on 8x11 paper, but it's a pretty pattern with a bow glued on it...Here's what it says:

Mr. and Mrs. Toshio Kwan
&
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith

Announce the marriage of their children

Sumi Kwan

&

Michael Steven Smith

In celebration of this happy event please join us at a Reception

April 30, 2005

(the location is a bar/restaurant)

Please RSVP regrets only by April 8th 1-888-555-1234

******now, if this was a wedding, wouldn't they want RSVPs for acceptances AND regrets? But, if it's an e-party, wouldn't it say "announce the engagement of"?

Is it possible that they'd eloped?

I guess. Dh is afraid to call the guy and ask because either way, it will make the mom look dumb for not phrasing the invitation more clearly

sounds like they are already married, and are just having a reception, they probably eloped or something.

Sounds like they are married and just having a reception for those that could not attend (did not know about) the wedding ceremony.

it seems like they got married, maybe at city hall, and they're having a reception now..really informal, which would explain the informality of the invite.

it definitely doesn't seem like an e-party to me

They are def. married. That's a marriage announcement and reception. Prob. eloped or very small ceremony.

They must be married. The wording is almost identical to our invitations which were for a reception only.

Ditto! That wording is a marriage announcement...not an e-party...the party is to "celebrate the happy occasion" and the occasion mentioned in the wording is the marriage of (hence the announcement). It's a reception, no wedding since it already happened.

Definitely an announcement of the marriage. A friend of ours got married and didn't have a reception. A couple of months later, his parents threw a small informal party (reception) to celebrate with close family and friends. This is probably a similar situation.

It reads like they were married already privately, and you are invited to a reception after their actual marriage.
Perhaps they postponned the marriage, or eloped.

I have a friend who eloped in August and her mother hosted a reception the following January to share it with others.

It sounds like they are married:

1. They are "announcing the marriage"
2. In "celebration of this event"

...kinda gives it away to me.

They're married. My friend sent out invitations with the exact wording. She and her husband had a small ceremony (just their parents, siblings, and grandparents). They had a "celebration" afterwards and the invitations were the same as above.

Congratulate them on their marriage since they are already Mr. & Mrs.

I agree sounds like they went to city hall but the parents want to have a celebration for them- def not an engagement invite.
