Jewish Brides - Breaking Glass & Ketubahs
Hi All. It seems like every time I start to plan the next thing, it opens up a million questions! Anyway, do you know, do we have to supply the glass that FH breaks at the ceremony? But I will check with our Cantor. Also, I started looking for a Ketubah. We are reformed Jews. Does the wording matter? I've seen so many that it was starting to get confusing. Are there any guidelines? Where are all of you purchasing yours?

Re: Jewish Brides - Breaking Glass & Ketubahs
We're not getting a ketubah but I know a lot of people have at least looked at them, if not gotten then, from eketubah.com.
As for the breaking of the glass, we're using what the hall's giving us (probably a light bulb in a napkin). You can do that, I'm sure your hall will provide it with the ceremony fees. But, some people purchase something that they can then keep the glass from, in a frame or something like that. I think Zion Lion is a good place for that sort of stuff.

Re: Jewish Brides - Breaking Glass & Ketubahs
We're going to bring our own glass. We're going to get it from www.exclusivelyweddings.com. If you click on the ceremony tab, you'll find it. It's a glass in a pouch.
As for ketubahs, when the time comes we're going to go look in the city at the Jewish Museum. We've heard that they have beautiful ones.
Edited to say that the glass we're bringing is called the Mazel Tov Groom's Glass In Satin Bag. You can do a search for it.

Re: Jewish Brides - Breaking Glass & Ketubahs
I got my ketubah from ketubah.com- generally you can purchase in either reform or conservative text.
We got our breaking glass in a cute little pouch from I think Judaism.com- you can also look on allthingsjewish.com
I googled Judaica and ketubah and found these sites.

Re: Jewish Brides - Breaking Glass & Ketubahs
I got my Ketubah (personalized) and breaking glass from Zion Lion in Woodbury. Since FH is not Jewish, I chose an interfaith wording. However, I found the ladies who work at Zion Lion to be very helpful- they explained the different passeges to me. (Sorry, I can't remmeber- I just chose the interfaith and moved on!)
This is a pic. of the Ketubah that I got:

Re: Jewish Brides - Breaking Glass & Ketubahs
Most catering halls will provide you with a glass to break. However, if you want to keep the broken glass in a mezzuzah, you may purchase a colored one on your own. Later, you send it in, and it's put in a mezzuzah for you.
Ask your rabbi or cantor what wording he wants you to have for your ketubah. I got mine at Yussels in Merrick. They were very helpful. Most Ketubahs can be printed with a variety of texts.

Re: Jewish Brides - Breaking Glass & Ketubahs
I plan on bringing my own colored glass/light bulb because I plan to have the broken glass suspended in a clear resin cube or made into a mezzuzah after the wedding.
A light bulb is acceptable as glass to step on. Because the glass is so thin and hollow, it makes a much better and louder popping sound.

We got our ketubah from this site too and I can't say enough good things about it. They have been really easy to work with and extremely quick. There are a ton of texts to choose from. We picked the one we felt most comfortable with and ran it by our Rabbi before ordering to make sure she approved it. We're using one of my grandfather's shot glasses (he is not with us anymore and many people who have gotten married from my family since he passed have used a glass from his collection) as our glass we're breaking. It will be a way of honoring him during the wedding.

There is also a Zion Lion in New Hyde Park. Just an FYI. I would also try any of the judaica stores on Main Street in Queens (Kew Gardens Hills) between Union Tpke and the LIE.

That's my area (since we got married), but I haven't explored any of the judaica stores yet - which ones are good?

OY VEY!!! I lived in Kew Gardens Hills for 6 years. I always liked Gift World on Main Street. However since I am not Shomer Shabbos, they don't exactly run to help me. I had been in there with my mother to buy a seder plate. They barely acknowledgeed us until we picked the most expensive one. THEN we were worthy.
I also work in Crown Heights. If you go on Kingston Avenue about a block in from Eastern Parkway, there are a ton of stores too. Try Boro Park as well if you are in the mood for Brooklyn. Just not on a Saturday

I get WAY too intimidated by Boro Park!! I'll stick to Main Street for now..I know the area well, b/c I go there to get Kosher meat regularly. I just haven't checked out the other shops yet.
