Where is a less expensive place to buy a house/condo?
Any ideas? Within I'd say 1.5 hours of the city commuting

It really depends on where the condo is
You are responsible for the inside of the condo not the outside

Really? I ahve no idea about condos. The only experience I had was looking at 4BR victorians in Suffolk..so I think everything's expensive... where can i look for a condo?

Re: Where is a less expensive place to buy a house/condo?
I don't know about Long Island -- but you'd have to move REALLY far north into upper Westchester to find a decent sized condo for under $350K ...
If you are remotely interesting to go in that direction rather than further out on LI, DH and I saw some decent sized townhouses on the border of Westchester/Putnam counties (anywhere from a 1-1.5 hour train ride via MetroNorth into GCT) in the high 300's... but even then the nicest ones were $399-410 or so (yes - totally ridiculous!!)
My parents are in a 2 bedroom co-op in Scarsdale (lower Westchester) and if they were to sell it right now they could get $310K for it .. and the maintenance on their co-op is insane
And personally I'd recommend a condo over a co-op ...

Re: Where is a less expensive place to buy a house/condo?
I'm looking for a 1-2 bedroom condo, or townhouse? what's the difference? for my mom. I think that might be the better route than a house b/c she can't do maintenance, etc.
thanks felicia...my brother in law suggested putnam..but it's so hard to try to look, when you don't know what's a good area and what isn't

Where do you live? Do you know any areas that are good, or, I don't know where to look for postings of condos.
It doesn't have to be huge. We live in a house now, but it's a 2 family, so our apartment isn't really huge..and when I get married I won't be living there

Re: Where is a less expensive place to buy a house/condo?
We recently (like two weeks ago) looked at a condo in Putnam (Brewster, or Carmel, I don't remember now). It was $310k. Two bedrooms, 2.5 baths, finished basement. 2000 square feet. It was very nice. It seems like there are a good number of condos in that area in that price range.
houlihanlawrence.com is a good place to look.

Are you interested in NJ? I live in a 2-bedroom and it was less than 250K? My commute into the city (by train) is approx. 1hr 30 minutes give or take..door to door!! just to give you idea of how far you are from NYC.

Re: Where is a less expensive place to buy a house/condo?
your mom isn't a senior citizen is she? I think there are some complexes that cater just to them (not just rentals)
my old neighborhood in westchester wans't expensive ( fleetwood) but hit is moistly co-ops in mide-rise buildings.
Felecia, MY freinds have a 2 bedroom co-cop in Eastchester that was under $300,000 in Nov 03, but prices in there complex are going up. Its a nice place, not too close to train-- a long walk or a short drive to Crestwood.

Oh definitely I agree with Tracy -- if you look into Carmel , Brewster , Cortlandt... well into Putnam County.. you can find some really nice townhomes up there, nice areas as well.
I'm not sure how long the commute is into NYC from there, but I'd say its still about 1.5 hour into Grand Central..
The only reason DH and I don't look up that far is because as long as he's still working in Woodbury, LI we cannot move any further north than we already are .. he's be communting for hours a day and its just not logical for us

Yes, I found it on there, I can FM you the name of the woman from HL who we are working with. She seems nice and seems to know a lot about the different complexes. We like that area a lot- it's quiet but not too rural. I know the complex we looked at was right near the Metro North station, not sure how long the train ride is to the city. I know the drive to the Bronx will take me about an hour.

you can buy a 2-3 bedroom townhouse in NJ for under $350K. we paid less than that for ours and we're only an hour away from the city.
