Annulment question (for a friend)....
I am hoping someone can help me!
My friend is Catholic and will soon be engaged to a Catholic man. She was married before in a Muslim ceremony on her fathers front porch (not in a church) She is legally divorced.
Will the Catholic church marry her? Will she have to get an annulment?
Any info would be great! TIA!

Re: Annulment question (for a friend)....
I'm not entirely sure, but I thought they only cared if the person was married in the catholic church.

I think you only have to get the annulment from the church if you were married by the Catholic church the first time. I think she's ok as long as she's legally divorced.

Re: Annulment question (for a friend)....
i don't think so either - the church only recognizes marriages that take place in the church or done by a priest - but properly have to go through some extra conseling from the priest to make sure you are in this marriage for life

She may not need one, but in the initial interview, the priest does ask you if you were married before, whether it was in the church or not.

Re: Annulment question (for a friend)....
Most likely, she will need an annulment. If she required a legal proceeding for a divorce, that means that she was legally married and her marriage certificate will state "divorced".

No. The Catholic church only requires annulments for marriages that took place in a Catholic cermeony. An ex boyfriend from college had a quicky civil wedding (she was pregnant) on the beach in the Bahamas. The marriage lasted less than a year. He was remarried last year (8 or 9 years later) in the Catholic church. He did not require an annulment. Had he been married the first time in a Catholic church he would have needed one.

Re: Annulment question (for a friend)....
I was told by the deacon helping in my annullment that if you were not married in a catholic church you dont need an annullment. I was married in city hall and then had a church wedding but I wasnt sure if the church wedding was recorded(long story)so St. Kilians looked into it for me and said if it wasnt recorded then I dont have to worry about it and just to come down with my divorce papers.

Re: Annulment question (for a friend)....
I think it depends on the parish. I have a friend whose husband was married before but not in a church and her parish wouldn't marry them until he got an annulment.
