Spinoff to Laundry Room Etiquette- TRAIN etiquette

Check out what happened to me the other morning. I take NJ transit (the railroad) and similiar to LIRR there are 2 seaters on one side and 3 seaters on the other side. I sat down on a 3 seater. There was a lady in the same 3 seater sitting next to the window. Well, at the next stop, these 2 teenagers got on, a boy and a girl. The girl asks to sit next to me (in between the lady and I). So, I got up so she could slide in. The boy then pushes me out of the way and takes my seat! So, basically I got up to let HER in and I got suckered out of my seat. I then realized that the boy was disabled and so I of course didnt mind letting him have a seat - but the girl was fine and said nothing to me - not a sorry, not a thank you, nothing. Since this was rush hour in the morning, most of the seats were taken. A lady was nice enough to make room for me and let me squeeze in her row.

How rude though!

Re: Spinoff to Laundry Room Etiquette- TRAIN etiquette

I hate when I'm on a crowded train, and we're heading home, and as the train empties, the person who is sitting next to me in a 3 seater (I'm in the window seat, they're in the middle)won't move over to the end seat, so pretty much we're squished together for the rest of the ride home, when there's PLENTY of empty seats around! Just move over ya jerk!

Wow...

I hate when people talk loudly on their phones. If you need the phone, you need the phone, but if you're four rows in front of me I just should not be able to hear your conversation. Though one time a woman doing this was so caught up on the phone that she missed her stop.

I've also noticed women putting on ALL their makeup on the train. That's just gross to me.

Re: Spinoff to Laundry Room Etiquette- TRAIN etiquette

I was behind two women who decided to check out all their ring tones on their cell phones while we were riding back to NJ on the train.

60 minutes of them playing "name that tune" with their ring tones, and they had one of those new phones where it has all the noises too (burps, sneezes, etc.) They thought every single one was hysterical.

It was driving me crazy!!!

Re: Spinoff to Laundry Room Etiquette- TRAIN etiquette

There are some unspoken rules that exist that people who don't take the train every day don't realize... I'll post them here just in case anyone on here who doesn't take the train on a daily basis needs to take it during the rush hour (either morning or evening).

1) In the AM there is no talking. Well, you can talk- but do it quietly. People are sleeping or reading the paper or mourning the fact that they have to go to work... again... talking is disruptive.

2) if you are in a subway car during ANY time do NOT lean on the poles. Other people just might have to hang onto them. Having someone flatten your hand with their back just because they want to lean isn't pleasant... epsecially at 8.00 am in the morning.

.... I haven't had my morning coffee yet, this is as good as I get- does anyone want to add commuter faux pas?

Re: Spinoff to Laundry Room Etiquette- TRAIN etiquette

The other night I got on the train after a really long day (and I was wearing heels, grrr) and this @$$ was sitting in a 2-seater on the subway with his bike blocking the other seat. So I looked at him, he looked at me, he closed his eyes like he's sleeping. So now I am boring into him with my eyes and he looks at me again, cause he knows he's soo wrong so I said to him. "Excuse me, does your bike have a metrocard too?" and he's like "what?" ... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I was like "Move the bike, I paid my fare."
He was not happy, but then got off at the next stop anyway, why be mean to someone for 1 feckin stop???

I HATE THE TRAIN.

Re: Spinoff to Laundry Room Etiquette- TRAIN etiquette

This is the biggest reason I hate my commute. The talking in the morning on thr train really pisses me off...especially the coffee clutch in the seat facing each other. Keep it down. Last night I had a guy (obviously religious) praying out loud! Now, ok, pray all you want, but out loud?

In the am yesterday this guy put his wet umbrella on the seat so no one could sit there. When the conductor came to check tickets I told her that he would pay for my fare since I had to stand the whole way and obviously his umbrella was more in need of the seat. I told on him, the whole train laughed and he felt like an a$$.

I'm so sorry you lost your seat. That is just the worst!!!

OH JEEZ where do I start!
On our train in the morning we had a guy who used to practice his guitar, one person who clips their fingernails, one guy who flosses and brushes his teeth (I SWEAR on this one) this group of really loud lawyers who always talk about their cases... UGH! We try and find a quiet car every morning... but it's no use. We get stuck with these really RUDE people.

I completely agree. The no talking in the morning "rule" is stupid.
Some people prefer to sleep in the evening too, you know.

The large loud groups are annoying am or pm, but talking, whatever.

I'm sorry you lost your seat MrsTC.. especially to such an ingrate.

While I have accepted it on the subway... I think that pushing to get on a commuter train is stooopid. There just is no need... it's not going to get you into a seat any faster.

Re: Spinoff to Laundry Room Etiquette- TRAIN etiquette

LOL i know it's ridiculous...and yesterday as I was walking and looking for a seat, you know, it's too tight for 2 people to walk past without bumping each other. This man was waiting for a load of people to pass and when it got to me, he was like "Its now or never - I have to make a break for it!" And pushed me aside. So wonderful for me that I get to be the lucky person that got smooshed up against the seats! I am so nervous that when I get PG some idiot will push me or that I wall fall in the armpit of penn station or in between the tracks and the train or something!

That worries me too. I see a lot of PG women on the train, but I don't know if I could do it.
I fall down enough as it is. I did get my leg stuck in
the gap once.

What I mean by "no talking" is be respectful of others- early in the morning the majority of people are either sleeping or reading the paper... talking loudly is sort of rude and obnoxious.. Talking quietly is or course fine...

And the "no talking rule" at least when I took the LIRR was both ways, AM AND PM... unless it was the bar car (do they still have those?)

I dont know if they have the bar cars, but when I went out to the Hamptons last weekend, they were selling beer and liquor at a little stand on the platform I thought that was pretty amusing....soooooooooo diff from NJ transit!

One thing that I loved about LIRR that NJT needs to do!

The LIRR, unless they had trouble with one of their trains/lines/etc., would have their trains platform at assigned tracks. Meaning, if I took the 5:33 home, I knew it was always gonna be on track 18.

Half of the NJT/Penn station clusterfart is their main corridor where everyone and their grandmother hold up traffic waiting for their track to be announced.

Re: Spinoff to Laundry Room Etiquette- TRAIN etiquette

Over the summer when I was working in Westchester I took the Metro North during rehersals. There was this man with his drum sticks out headphones on just drumming away on the back of the seat. The person sitting across from me and I kept giving each other looks like "Which one of us is going to say something". Well, it was me. I finally waved at the man and mimed for him to take off his headphones. He complied. I said "I'm sorry sir, but your practice drumming is really bothersome to some the rest of us." I will say that he was very nice about it and said "Oh really" and stopped, but how could he not know? HELLO!!!! You are not the only person in the world!!!

That's interesting.
I had a problem with this on the LIRR. The trains were usual ( my dad has a cheat sheet, in case he takes a differnt train than usual) but the non- regulars & late at night, pretty much everybody would stand in front of that board & wait for the track & stampede to the track when it was posted.

On the Metro North, they post the tracks much earlier, so there is not as much standing around & stampeding. When you see that, you know there is a problem.

They aren't as predictable though, but it is ok, b/c there are monitors everywhere telling you what track , and they are posted early.
