Review of my engagement celebration at Stir, NYC
Hi Ladies,
I didn't want a typical engagement party, but I decided that since I live in FL now, I wanted to get all my friends together to celebrate in some way. So FI and I just threw together a little party at Stir, on the Upper East Side (www.stirnyc.com). We had about 80 people. Here is my review:
The Place:
Stir is a GREAT lounge. It has the dark, loungey, maybe somewhat trendy (but not over the top) feel. It is really nice inside - roomy bar area in the front, and then candlelit tables with couches set up in the back. Also, plenty of bathrooms for us. There was never a line of more than 2 people at any one time. It's probably because all the bathrooms are single stall rooms for men/women. So the women got the benefit of the speedy men! LOL
The Service:
This category needs to be split up, because I did have some problems, but NOT with the bartenders.
BARTENDERS: were AWESOME! Personable, friendly, fast. Some of the best bartenders I've been around. They were great with my party.
DRINKS: Fairly expensive, but hey, it's the UES in NYC.
Pre-Party Planning: I had a bunch of issues when planning the party with one of the owners. I know a bunch of people on here might know one or more of the owners, so I am not going to get into TOO much detail here. To summarize, let's just say I felt like I wasn't dealing with the most professional person during the planning process. My name was often forgotten, the date of the event was forgotton (though planned over a month in advance), what I WANTED at the party was even disputed at one point (including COSTS, etc). Anyway, once I brought it to a co-owners attention, things were resolved, and I did get an apology. But I'm upset I had to deal with it in the first place, ya know?
Non-Bartender Service at the Lounge: One issue I had had when planning the party was that I wanted my friends to be able to use the tables/couches. OF COURSE this is a main reason we'd want to be at a lounge. It ended up being a bit of an issue during the pre-planning... Anyway, they agreed to let me use the tables until 10pm (My party was from 7 to 11, and then lasted much later than that of course!!! I had friends there til at least 3am ). It annoyed me that my Fiance's mother and her friend, and some of my friends, were told that they could not sit at the tables - they were told this WAY before 10 - in fact, i think it may have been around 8PM!!!! I asked the person that said it, (not sure what her position was), and she said she MEANT that they couldn't sit there past ten. I said OK, but I'm thinking, THEN WHY WOULD YOU BOTHER THEM ABOUT IT NOW??? It wasn't even near ten. And considering this had been a big issue in the pre-planning, I almost felt like she was purposefully doing it - but who knows.
OVERALL SUMMARY: Everyone had a great time! I mean, FI and I had issues with the planning, and maybe one group of my friends got the couch comment, which really annoyed them, and which has taken up a lot of space in this review. However, I got a TON of compliments about the place itself, AND the bartending service, etc. A lot of my friends have raved about what a good time they had. I mean, no one really knew about all of the problems I had during planning. I would DEFINITELY recommend going to this bar on any weekend. It is a great lounge with a good atmosphere. I don't know if I'd recommend throwing a party there, but if you do, just make sure you get EXACTLY what you want in writing. Overall, it was an AWESOME night, and FI and I had a great time, and so did all of our friends!!!
