Amalfi Coast: Where did you stay?
Our travel agent is recommending Sorrento to stay, but then do trips from this town because of it's geographic location (close to Capri, Positano, etc).
Did anyone else stay in other towns in this region?

Re: Amalfi Coast: Where did you stay?
Hi
I have family in Naples and Sicily.. so when we went we stayed with them..I have been to Capri, Amalfi Coast, and Sorrento.
I can tell you that Capri is Gorgeous!! We didnt stay overnight..but I would of loved to spend a couple of days there. We took a boat to Capri...Amalfi Coast was also breathtaking..My uncle drove us and we spent the day..same with Sorrento..
I would suggest spending a couple of days in Capri..they have wonderful beaches!!!!

We're going in May and we're staying in Sorrento - at the Hilton I think.

Re: Amalfi Coast: Where did you stay?
We stayed in Positano and Capri. I preferred Capri. I found that Positano had some nice beaches and shops, but I wasn't thrilled with it. Capri was wonderful and DH and I said we would go back in a heartbeat!

Re: Amalfi Coast: Where did you stay?
We stayed in the town of Amalfi. Positano is great too. I hear Ravello is gorgeous. Sorrento is more "city" like and so there are bigger hotels there - some very posh. We liked the charm of the smaller towns, so it depends on what kind of environment you want to stay at.

Re: Amalfi Coast: Where did you stay?
From what I've been told, staying in the smaller "hilly" towns may by difficult to navigate via car when trying to leave the town to visit others. Is this true?
My DH is no help here, he lived in Northern Italy (7 years), and never traveled to Amalfi.

Re: Amalfi Coast: Where did you stay?
Positano was hilly and the street was a spiral so you had to drive around to get up the mountain. I was tough because they are pretty crazy drivers who are really used to the narrow streets and sharp turns and our stomachs were not.

We had a rental car and we made sure the hotel we stayed at made some parking arrangements for us. Amalfi was not very hilly. But Positano is definitely hilly and windy. When we drove around to the other towns we would look to park the car somewhere then just walked around the city/town. The driving was a bit challenging at times because of the winding narrow roads and you have to watch out for the buses because at places there would not be enough room for a car and a bus to pass. I did not dare to drive - I left it to my husband.
