So do you plan to stay home, work, or
work part-time, or work from home once the babies come? And if you are planning to stay home -- how long are you planning to stay home for -- till the baby's in pre-school? Kindergarten? 6 mos?

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
We all know what I want to do but realistically, I will get bored with myself if I stay home so I will either cut down on hours or work part time.

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
It's so hard for me to say right now. I feel that I will have to work full time, b/c once I get out of school and begin my career I will likely be making more money than DH. However, I would really like to be home full time with my children for the first few years. I just don't think that it's likely to happen. I'll probably just be home for the first few months.

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
I stay home with my kids. My oldest is in kindergarten this year. I'll probably stay home until my youngest is in first grade (2007). That's the current plan anyway.

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
This is my biggest worry about having children..
I'm not thrilled with it -- but I've resolved myself to the fact that I'll have to go back to work fulltime when we have children . I truly would have loved to stay home at least for the first few years, however financially that's just not possible
My main dilemma, however, is finding affordable and reliable daycare. THAT's what throws me into panic mode

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
As much as I would love to stay home with the kids, I wont be able to. Don makes good money so if I wanted to be a SAHM I could but we wouldnt save anything and I dont want that.
We are very fortunate that both sets of parents are retired (and live close by) so they will watch the baby when I go back to work.

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
If/when we have children, I would like to stay home, at least untill the youngest ( if we have more than 1) is in 1st grade. Then I would like to work part time maybe.
Of course, this would all be if we could afford it. I am certainI DO NOT want to commute inot the city if I have kids though. I get home so late, they'd be asleep.
I'd be afraid to not go back at all ,and then have no experience & not be able to find a job when they are in college or if my husband died or couldn't work or something.
I don't really have a career though, just a job that I hate & is far from my home.

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
I fully intend to stay home until my children are in school part-time. DH wouldn't have it any other way, he said he would work 3 jobs so I can raise our children if he had to.

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
I am pregnant right now, and the original plan was for me to stay home; however, since DH is in private practice, he has no health insurance and paying for it is outrageously expensive! I am a teacher. We have now decided that I will come back to school next year which won't be so bad (I'm due the first day of school! Hope I won't have to come back until after Christmas) After the second one, I'll probably stay home. Secretly, I'm a bit relieved I don't have to give up my job just yet!

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
Unfortunately I'll have to work full-time. I'm not happy about it, but we don't really have a choice. DH's goal is for me to ultimately be a SAHM, so he's working his tail off to move up the ladder as quickly as possible....

If I stay in my current field, I should be able to work from home.
Maybe I will think differently when the kiddies come, but right now I don't think I'd make a very good SAHM.

Move out of Long Island and that changes everything. We have to decide about kids while the clock ticks away, but that's one of the reasons we don't have them yet....can't even see how people do it!

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
We were actually talking about this just last night. In a perfect world, DH would be ready for kids now and he would like me to be a SAHM, but that just isn't the reality of things. I will have to go back to work full-time for us to be able to afford things.

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
I answered full time work, but actually my top choice, if financial issues were irrelevant, would like to work part time. I have worked really hard with a return to school for a career change to get to where I am professionally. I have a lot of respect for people who are SAHMs (my mom was) but I am npt sure that I could be home all day, every day with the kids.
My job is the more stable of the 2, with the better benefits and more time off. It doesn't make sense for me to give it up. DH might be able to work from home with more flexible hours than me. But.....we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Unfortunately, unless we move, which I don't see happening, we will both have to continue to work if we want a house.

I can imagine your concern! You are already preggo, so I know this dilemma is in the forefront of your mind as we speak. As wonderful and joyous as being pregnant is, there is just so much to consider when thinking about going back to work, being a SAHM - esp when living in NY its so tough
Me, I am a worrier by nature. So I sweat just thinking about it. We aren't quite at TTC yet (though I wouldn't be sorry at this point if got preggo ) but still I am so very unsure what we will do when we have children and I have to go back to work. I am not even sure I can depend on my Mom, even though she is now retired and the offer is kinda/sorta 'out there. But I truly doubt she wants to be tied down 5 days a week with an infant -- and I cannot blame her
I'm sure if someone had the perfect solution to this, they'd let us know right?

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
we haven't really worked this out yet since we are not ttc for a few more years, but i would love to stay at home at least for the first few years. if that's not possible i'd love to be able to only work part-time or work from home. one thing we do have going for us is that my sister and bil own a daycare/preschool so we'd have a safe place for them to go when the time comes. of course that's assuming we live near there!

Re: So do you plan to stay home, work, or
My plan is to be home 3-4 months then go back to work PT, maybe 3 days a week, 2 weeknights and I weekend day. Since I am in healthcare I can do this. We do not plan to use day care. We will work out schedules out and my mom will be nearby. We are fortunate that we don't live in NY and while we could get by OK on DH's salary I feel we would have to sacrifice too much and so would our children so PT work for me it will be. I can also pick up extra shifts here and there for school clothes, vacations, etc. I am not good at sacrifice so hopefully this plan works out financially for us (of course I want my kids to have the best of everything.... )

Both DH and I are writers, so when the kids come we hope to be financially solvent enough to BOTH work at home.
