My official creepiest moment as a teacher...it happened today!

Ok, so I am a music teacher for first through eighth grade. Today, I left my classroom to go eat lunch in the faculty room. I came back twenty minutes later to put my drink on my desk before I had recess duty...I walked into my room and put my drink on my desk and then I heard this noise that sounded like a guitar being played....and I looked, and there was this GIGANTIC man sitting with his back to me with one of my guitars IN THE DARK, in MY CLASSROOM! So, I ran out because I thought I was SEEING things. On my way out, I literally bumped into the kindergarten teacher and the library teacher and asked them to look in my room and tell me what they saw...so they got really freaked out too because this man was just SITTING there plucking at one string on the guitar in the dark. He didn't even move when I was in the room. So all three of us went in, turned on the lights and HE STILL DIDN'T MOVE, he just ignored us. So the librarian went up to him and looked him in the face and said, "HI! I'm the librarian, WHO ARE YOU?" And he just ignored her! Then she said, "Do you even have a child in this school?" And he ignored her! Now, we work in an INCREDIBLY small school where we know all the parents. It turns out this was a pre-schoolers parent, but I am very creeped out that there was a strange man in my room who refused to talk to us, WENT THROUGH MY CLOSET and took out a guitar and NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT IT! That is MY classroom. When I told the headmaster, he just seemed to act like it was typical for this man, but I don't feel comfortable with what happened or how it was dealt with. I'm frustrated and annoyed because I have ALL of my personal belongings in there, including my flute that costs more than my new car.

WOW. I don't blame you for being freaked out. The headmaster really should have done something about it. It sounds like he seriously has something wrong with him. Can you talk to the teacher of his child to see what his or her experiences have been with this man?

I don't have a door that locks. Our school is in an old estate, and everything is original to the house, including the doorknobs and what not. I have a gorgeous classroom with no way to lock it. And I have tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment. I may see if I can at least get a lock for my closet.

That's exactly what I plan on doing on Monday. I mean, I've seen some winners in my day, but this takes the cake.

It's unsettling that someone can just get into the school and go wherever he pleases.

I can't believe that the headmaster is being so blase' about this!! What if this was a child molester or kidnapper who just wandered into the school?

They didn't do anything about this??? OMG.....and WHY did he ignore all of you???? Does he have a hearing issue? That would be TOO creepy for me...I'd push the issue with the headmaster that you want your room locked or something

OMG that is so psychotic. It sounds like a scary movie. My sis is a teacher and if that happened to her she would have freaked out and would never stop talking about it. I feel like something should have been said....in most schools parents are not allowed to just wander around the halls. Why is the school being so lax about that????

omg I thought the same thing! I thought she was going to say he was dead. but seriously that is freaky i would put a lock on my door for now on so no one can be in there unless you are a teacher or a person who works in the building have extra set of keys for certain people to come in the room.

Re: My official creepiest moment as a teacher...it happened today!

Well, I will let everyone know what happens tomorrow when I go to work. The man turned out to be a parent of a pre-schooler (we have nursery school through eighth grade). The problem with my school is that people pay thousands of dollars to go there, and the parents are the ones who technically run the school, so even though there is a rule about no parents in or near the classrooms, they think they can do whatever they want because they pay for the kids to go there. It's absolutely ridiculous. And to make it worse, the headmaster makes us lock all of the doors when we take the kids out for recess because "it's a security hazard to have them unlocked." Then we have to bang on the door for someone to let us into the building. Am I the only one who sees somethign wrong with that? Yet, parents can wander anywhere they want. So, yes, I will keep you all posted, although I'm SURE nothing will be done.

Rachel, that would freak me out too.

Did he just eventually get up and walk out of the classroom and pass you three without saying anything?

How did you find who he was?

Re: My official creepiest moment as a teacher...it happened today!

Always lock your room...parents have no right to be in your room!!!

That is rediculous...you mentioned a headmaster so it sounds like a private school where the parents feel that they can do whatever they want. Are you part of a union?? If so seek a union rep out about this!!!

Re: My official creepiest moment as a teacher...it happened today!

The school district where I went to HS and had some recreational jobs was public, but wealthy. It's amazing what parents with money can do to administrators. We had this father who everyone knew (or at least thought) abused the kids and he held such power over teachers, etc. as well. It's really unfortunate that people in power are so scared of people with money. Incidentally, I don't think this father that I'm talking about was among the wealthier, but still, there was always this culture of "parents rule." Anyway, the children are your first concern when you're a teacher. As a music teacher, do you feel like you have less power than other teachers? (My dad is a music teacher and I know that sometimes happens.) Can you get together with some other teachers to kind of petition for a change (not literally sign a petition...if it's a small school, I'm sure it can be done on a more personal level). But, just to have support in approaching the headmaster and asking that things be changed, that parents not have so much freedom as to put teachers and children in such a fearful, unsafe state?

good luck

Re: My official creepiest moment as a teacher...it happened today!

Well, nothing was done, and today when I was walking towards my classroom, AGAIN, the SAME MAN started walking into my room! But the kindergarten music teacher was in there, so he didn't go in. I'm so mad, I cannot even believe this man was about to go back into my classroom!!!!!!!!!!! I have been out of the building for most of the day and now the headmaster is tied up in a meeting, so I won't be able to talk to him today. I'm so pissed off. Unfortunately, we've had discussions, long meetings, etc, as a faculty with the headmaster about this issue with parents and something will get done for a week, and then it's back to the same ol' same ol'. We do not have a union at all in my school. No one to look out for OUR best interests. My main concern is for the children, especially because we recently had an issue with a father who was not supposed to be picking up their child from school because of a messy divorce, and they let him take her. The teachers were OUTRAGED and called the mother, but nothing got done about it. We were told that we are to always send a child with their parent, no matter what. BS, absolute BS.
