Is this the proper way to handle this situation?
A couple of weeks ago I started training for a bartending position at a new resturant. I trained for 4 shifts (unpaid to my knowledge) at their other locations while waiting for the place to open. It was scheduled to open this past Monday, but was not ready to open yet. I went to a meeting Monday morning instead and they said that they were not sure when the place was going to be ready, but they were hopeful for this coming weekend or Monday and they would be in contact with us. Well, I have not heard form them since then. I feel like I need to call to check in on the situation. I am planning on calling and just inquiring about what the current status, but I hate being a pain. So, I thought that if I called I could say that I needed an update because I have been asked to pick up shifts at my other job and did not want to double schedule myself. That is reasonable right?

That sounds very resonable. I would think that they would understand. If you do tell them that the reason you're checking is so you don't double book, I wouldn't see that as being a pain, quite the opposite; responsible.
