My fmil is an expert on diamonds and she says that the best recipe for cleaning your ring is :

1/4 teaspoon of any dishwashing detergent
1cup of water
mix together and put in microwave for 2 min (or until mixture is boiling)
drop ring in mixture for about 30 seconds
rinse with cold water
It comes out absolutely beautiful!!!

Let me know if you try it!

Is this safe for all metals, i.e. yellow gold, white gold and platinum? Silly question maybe?

that sounds like a good idea. i also use the cleaner that kay jewelers sell. its in a gel form but they tell you that you can pour some out in a bowl and them microwave it. that also works great.
