Blue painters tape question???

Ok so you know the blue painters tape that people use to line the walls...can I put that over paint that was painted a week ago? Will it rip the paint when I take it off.

Basically what I want to do is line the bottom of the wall above the baseboards and repaint the baseboards the color of the trim. Not sure if that stuff can go on top of paint. Any help is appreciated.

Kim

ETA: Here is a picture of the painters tape.

The painters tape won't pull off any of the paint. Just be sure that it's dry!

Also, make sure not to leave the tape on too long after the paint dries. We did this and had to do a lot of touching up.

Really? Darn. How do I paint the baseboard heater then and protect the freshly painted wall?

Re: Blue painters tape question???

My dad had a house painting business for years & I just asked him & he said it shouldn't take the paint off (but don't leave it on too long). He also said they make special non-stick tape, as well.

I will go pick up the non stick one. I am not taking any chances. The paint is so beautiful now. Thanks!

Re: Blue painters tape question???

Ok I found the answer on Benjamin Moore website. It says if you are putting the tape over freshly painted paint make sure it has dried over 24 hours. Then use low tack painters tape and remove right after the area you wanted to paint is painted. So that is what I am going to do. Wish me luck I will post pics of all the rooms when I am done.

It pulled off our paint as well!!!

I spent hours and hours taping with that blue tape...and in the end, it ripped some of the paint off the walls.
We had a painter come in and fix a lot...he tod us to never use the tapes, just get small brushes, and do it by hand, take your time.

I don't know what to do now. I guess I will get a small brush and go slow and not use the painters tape. I can paint my nails so hopefully I can paint the trim...haha.

I am not dealing with chipped paint.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Blue painters tape question???

lol, that's my nursery..

It didn't pull off the paint on our walls. I also suggest those small sponges that are square that you can use for edging they were great for us!

Good Luck!

Re: Blue painters tape question???

I've used the painters tape and it does pull off the paint. I did realize that if I take the take off before it is completely dry it helps avoid this problem but it's just messy.

Now I just use a small brush, it takes forever though.
