Oh I am so sorry
I agree that the music seems like it is everywhere, all the time... and if I'd suffered a loss as you did, I would be crying all the time as well
Hang in there - i cannot imagine what a difficult time this is for you!!!

I was stuck on the 135 in an unholy snowstorm last year and that freaking "christmas shoes" song came on the radio. I wanted to eat broken glass.
I can't stand the song b/c it's just so BAD!
I'll take John Lennon's Christmas-Peace-on-Earth song as a "let's remember how fortunate we are and make the world a better place" type song any day over the offensive shoe song.
totally agree on all points. give me john lennon any day. "shoes" is a schmaltzy tug at you to make you feel bad about what you have. i does get to me, but i try to not listen to it.
i have to laugh at this b/c the muppet christmas album with john denver is one of my favorites and as i was reading this, i was thinking 'yeah, more muppet lovers!'

Re: Depressing Christmas music...
I have to admit, since my parents divorced and my grandmother and father in law passed away there are alot of christmas songs that I find so depressing that I cant listen to them at all. I try to only listen to the upbeat kiddie like songs!

I don't like the song. I think it is melodramatic and was written to tug at the heartstrings.
I cried the first time I heard it and then I realized that they got me sucked in.
I COMPLETELY agree with Juliet on this one. I heard this song for the first time the other day and instead of being upset by it - I was actually pretty annoyed and more pissed off than anything.... Not for nothing, but this song is pretty low considering it's exploiting some poor kid's innocent gesture for his sick mom. I know these things do happen in real life, but it's a little shameless for someone to be making money of this "sad Christmas song" at the expense of catering to our emotions.... As a song in general, it's a bit much on the tugging at hearstring level - but to make it a CHRISTMAS song.... really doesnt make much sense to me - but I'm sure it's selling like crazy, the obvious reason for it's purpose in the first place. Ah, love the capitalism.....
I felt played after a while and then Hallmark made a movie of it and that was even more depressing. What happened to the uplifting family gathering stories and songs? People are depressed enough in real life, they need holiday music to lift their spirits not bring them down.

Re: Depressing Christmas music...
I like the Christmas Shoes song...I think it puts EVERYTHING in perspective especially when we are all too busy shopping until we drop. There are always some great expectations around the holidays that many people loose what the true meaning of Christmas is.
That is why every year, my parents made us do communmity service. We had 10 hrs a month to do with out complaining. It made us take such a look at what is important in life. Even in my busy life now I do community service, not ten hours but I try.

I cannot STAND the Christmas shoes song. I think or thought Christmas was about CELEBRATING the birth of Christ, not about being sad about people dying. It is about birth in my own opinion not death.

So funny I found this thread! My sister JUST called me and said she's going to teach my 4 year old nephew the "Christmas Shoes" song, revise it a bit and send him over to Coach.

Re: Depressing Christmas music...
Just a few unasked for thoughts.
- I can’t stand that song! God just freaking shoot me already. How is a depressing song about a kid’s desire to get his dying mother a pair of shoes for Christmas have ANYTHING to do with the season - Jesus was born in Sept. The bible says so if you read about how the shepards were minding the sheep. They don’t do that in the winter. - The Pegan Holiday was Dec 25th as stated before and the church moved the celebration of christ’s birth to that day. Odd how that turned out these days isn’t it? - Jesus was crucified in the spring and rose three days later - Easter was moved to counter another Pegan holiday of spring solstice and explains why Easter has eggs (fertility and the fact that hens don’t lay in the cold weather). - Gift giving for Christmas was brought over by European countries (I even believe it was turkey to be exact that started the ‘Santa’ thing) all over Europe, gift giving type holidays existed in the way we celebrate Thanksgiving. Odd how THAT turned about to the day meant the celebration of Christ’s birth, isn’t it?
Sorry but I REALLY don’t like that song. It’s sick and twisted and icky.
I used to celebrate xmas and I did it a whole lot differently than is advertised today. Now I think Xmas is just a scam, but I totally love opening up gifts and such. I wholeheartedly admit that when I think Xmas I don’t think of jesus I think of xmas songs of joy and peace and winter wonderland.
This sadistic song of a poor kid frustrates and annoys me. Although the point is who cares? I mean really, like it or not it’s just a song and sometimes ya just gotta make it through it. There are other songs I find distressingly sad, but I try hard to think of other things during that time or leave the area which it’s playing if possible.
My $.02.
