You should try "Merry Christmas from the Family" by Robert Keen. Chracks me up no matter what crap is going on in my life.
I am listening to his live CD right now - I love when the crowd sings along in parts. That song is hilarious!

Christianity was not at all wonky with its dates. Christmas was purposely placed where it is because Dec 25th was the biggest Pagen Holiday. It was a strategic move by the church to try and help make Christianity the only recognized religion.
Heidla... Thank you for the correction! I couldn't figure out how to word it! I didn't mean they were wrong, but that they did move the dates.

Can someone please explain to me the appeal of: "I wanna buy new shoes for my Mamma...blah, blah, blah..."
WTH is that???
That's not happy. That's not Christmasy...
And Celine Dion's 'O Holy Night' ...I wanted to slit my wrists right there in the nail salon.
How annoying.
I HEAR YA!!!!!

here's what i think
yes, it's the celebration of the birth of christ, but there's more to it
it's a day for family, for giving, not just getting, peace, goodwill and sacrifice
rudolph and frosty are cool and capture the joy of the season
the shoe song depicts the message of the importance of family and sacrifice
I completely agree. And I happen to like that song. It's not too often a song can bring out such strong emotion, and when it does, you have to appreciate that. I know that I do.

Okay - I actually like the song - it gives me a sense of what I have and that there are other people in the world who aren't as well off.
Also I thought Jesus was RESURRECTED in the spring. Correct me if I am wrong though.

I was stuck on the 135 in an unholy snowstorm last year and that freaking "christmas shoes" song came on the radio. I wanted to eat broken glass.
I can't stand the song b/c it's just so BAD!
I'll take John Lennon's Christmas-Peace-on-Earth song as a "let's remember how fortunate we are and make the world a better place" type song any day over the offensive shoe song.

not sure what that has to do with when he was born. He was born in the spring, and died in spring (or that could be wrong too). But the point is, Christianity stole it's religious timeframe from the Pagans.

I did believe that he was born on christmas and died during the spring and was resurrected on Easter - I brought this up because one of the other posters on this mentioned that he was born and died in spring. Good Friday is supposed to be the day that marks when he was crucified on the cross.

to be honest, none of the osngs are doing it for me this year.... I guess thats what happens when you get married and separated all in the same year....
Not even Feliz Navidad? In HS, my friend & were firm believers that no one could listen to that song without dancing!

Because the holiday season is a time for shmaltzy music played in the background of hermetically-sealed malls while over-worked and under-paid people get into fistfights over the year's hottest toy.
Just had to give props to my girl MonkeyLuv. This was THE quote of the thread..... Bravo, bravo!!
I don't have much to add about the subject matter. As Don knows ( ) I'm not a huge fan of holiday music on a whole. So really the shoe song doens't affect me one way of the other - I basically turn it off like I do most holiday tunes.
I know - bah humbug to me
Sorry , didn't mean to hijack the topic at hand! Me bad

Felicia....aww thanks!
After all, isn't that what this season is all about? repetitive and pointed music, arguing over the religious and non-religious aspects of a holiday, coma-inducing baked goods, and hundreds of dollars worth of plastic crap that will be broken before New Year's shoved under a wilting tree in the hopes of instilling goodwill and hope in the bitter, bitter hearts of cunsumers?
aahh, comfort and joy...

Re: Depressing Christmas music...
Soooo.....back on the topic of depressing Christmas Music. The songs that make me cry are:
I'll Be Home for Christmas (especially the last couple years)
3000 Miles (The Pretenders)
Have Your Self A Merry Little Christmas (especially the James Taylor version)
Keep Christmas With You (from Christmas Eve on Sesame Street...yes, I'm 29 and I still watch that!!)
I just sit an weep under my tree!! Then I put on the Muppets version of the 12 days of Christmas and all is right with the world!!
5 Golden Rings...Ba-da-bum-bum!!

I don't like the song. I think it is melodramatic and was written to tug at the heartstrings.
I cried the first time I heard it and then I realized that they got me sucked in.
I COMPLETELY agree with Juliet on this one. I heard this song for the first time the other day and instead of being upset by it - I was actually pretty annoyed and more pissed off than anything.... Not for nothing, but this song is pretty low considering it's exploiting some poor kid's innocent gesture for his sick mom. I know these things do happen in real life, but it's a little shameless for someone to be making money of this "sad Christmas song" at the expense of catering to our emotions.... As a song in general, it's a bit much on the tugging at hearstring level - but to make it a CHRISTMAS song.... really doesnt make much sense to me - but I'm sure it's selling like crazy, the obvious reason for it's purpose in the first place. Ah, love the capitalism.....
