Re: Depressing Christmas music...

I don't know...I think the holidays hit everyone differently....a few years ago I was in Macy's...it was jammed, long lines...and Grandma Got Runover by a Raindeer came on....before I knew it I had aligator tears streaming down my face.....same thing happens when I hear the dogs bark Rudolph the Rednose Raindeer....I remember the first time I heard it...my dog got started barking back, growling at the speakers, searching for the other dogs....we were on the floor howling.....
trust me, i hear you 100% with this... and the first person to agree... but i was just saying that that song is annoying. maybe on another day i would have been crying my eyes out if i heard it---just didn't happen to be today.

yes it is
my point was there are people that still celebrate christmas that may not necessarily believe in jesus
Yes, there are. The fact remains that Christmas is about the birth of Christ. You don't have to believe that to celebrate Christmas, but you have to know that Christmas is about that.

i do like it and i think songs like that are needed this time of year
it's sad but it's necessary
I don't even think its sad. It is, as my husband put it, gratuitous.

Also the winter solstice, since supposedly Jesus was actually born in the spring.

BMD...no, that's actually true. Well I never knew when he was supposedly born, but I knew it was winter. Christianity was all wonky with its dates. There's a lot of symbolism too in the times of year for the holidays (easter, assumption, christmas).

Re: Depressing Christmas music...
It has to do with the statement that people should know the reason for the season. That reason would be the sun, and the solstice!

Re: Depressing Christmas music...
here's what i think
yes, it's the celebration of the birth of christ, but there's more to it
it's a day for family, for giving, not just getting, peace, goodwill and sacrifice
rudolph and frosty are cool and capture the joy of the season
the shoe song depicts the message of the importance of family and sacrifice

Re: Depressing Christmas music...
Because the holiday season is a time for shmaltzy music played in the background of hermetically-sealed malls while over-worked and under-paid people get into fistfights over the year's hottest toy.

That's the associatoin or conotation of the holiday, not the meaning or defintition.
Personally, I like either the religious ones or the totally goofy ones, like Christmas Rapping. I don't need the radio to tell me to appreciate my family.

Re: Depressing Christmas music...
I don't necessarily disagree with you, I do find that the song tells a nice story, I don't find it christmas-y at all or that sad. The Christmas song that I do find sad is have yourself a merry little christmas...I added that as a reply to your celine dion suggestion.

Christianity was not at all wonky with its dates. Christmas was purposely placed where it is because Dec 25th was the biggest Pagen Holiday. It was a strategic move by the church to try and help make Christianity the only recognized religion.
As for the song. I heard it a few years ago (it has been around for longer then I thought and recorded by many people) and thought it was trying too hard to be sad. I heard it again in the car on the way home from Thanksgiving and DH agreed with my opinion. I enjoy sad songs, but that one doesn't make me sad it makes me wonder why it was written.

Re: Depressing Christmas music...
I hate that song with a passion!! Aside from it being HORRIBLE, I figure that if you believe in Jesus, (the target audience of the song), and you truly believe that you're going to heaven, you know that Jesus could care less what kind of shoes your wearing, if you're wearing shoes at all. I just think the song is DUMB.

You should try "Merry Christmas from the Family" by Robert Keen. Cracks me up no matter what crap is going on in my life.
