Repost from PETS since this board gets more traffic:
Update on Casey, our new Golden Retriever puppy - I need opionions to back up my proposal to DH :
We got her last Saturday and she has been making MAJOR progress with her training. This morning she did not pee in the cage overnight and knows pretty much to go outside for #1 and #2. We are having a little trouble with nipping but i guess thats normal bc she is trying to play - we are working on that. My 2 cats have come out of the basement lol and will be in the same room as Casey and will look at her but won't go near her!
My DH wants to go to stay at his Dad's this weekend. He wants us to bring Casey - here are the issues:
1) It takes 5 hrs to get there and she is not used to being in the car...esp for not that long. 2) I dont want to disrupt her routine - for training purposes.. 3) My FIL has 2 little dogs who pee in the house (yes, his stepmother puts paper on the floor and they pee- they are full grown ) and I dont know how Casey will react to them and I think they are a bad example lol 4) My IL's are a bit sloppy to put it mildly and there is crap all over the floor, i dont want Casey eating random things....
what do you guys think?

I know I replied over on PETS but I firmly believe you will be putting Casey two steps back after she's been doing so well to expose her to behavior you do not want her to learn at this point.
But good luck whatever you decide!

I have to agree here, especially when there are other dogs with poor habits invovled.
Is there someone who you can trust to watch her and stick to her schedule???

well, my aunt lives 5 min away and loves Casey but a puppy is so much work and I dont want to burden her with that....she has kids and pets of her own! Plus I would miss her so much!!!

i still wouldnt leave her, but thats just MO. Whats if you leave her and she doesnt do too well over your aunts. Like I said, She's gotta learn sometime. But its not my decision. I dont understand... canyou not take her out for potty and his moms house? Most crates fold up.

Re: Repost from PETS since this board gets more traffic:
Yes but what I was reading online in that it is very important for puppies to have their environment the same the first few weeks, like food in the same place, bathroom aka outside in the same place, etc etc. So I dont want to disrupt the routine.

Re: Repost from PETS since this board gets more traffic:
oh so if you left her home she would stay there and your aunt would go to your hom to take care of her? i thought you were leaving CAsey with your aunt. You will know whats best. I do not know Casey and im sure for one weekend no matter what you do everything will be fine!

Re: Repost from PETS since this board gets more traffic:
The car ride might not be so bad as long as you stop periodically to "walk" her. The only problem is that puppies quite often get carsick. I don't think that one weekend with wee wee pads around will cause a problem as long as you try to keep casety away from them and still walk her at the normal times. If you rbing her bed and toys from home she should be ok. The other dogs ay stress her out. And one weekend won't ruin her potty training. Dogs are smart and bounce back quickly, even if there is a setback which there need not be. If your aunt has dogs, then hopefully the stuff on hr floor isnt something that's likely to kill a dog, but just make sure casey has enough of her own toys (a kong with a treat in it will keep her attention) and she'll probably leave the other stuff alone. As long as she has her own crate, bed and toys from home, wth the same food and routine at the same time, she should be ok. If she has an accident or two while shes there, don't yell or get concerned, ignore it, she'll get back into her normla routine when she gets home.
My puppies were very young in the winder and we coudnt take the out in the snow. We let them use wee wee pads when the snow was really bad and after the snow they were able to go right back to the outside routine. You just need to pre-empt them wanting to go tot eh bathroom. They usually have their own times, like when waking from a nap or 15-40 minutes after eating,
