What are the best wedding details you have seen at a wedding?

As my wedding day draws near, I am now working more and more on the little "details" that will make it special. What are some of the best wedding "details" you have seen at a wedding? You know, the things that made the wedding unique to the couple or that made you go "How adorable!" or "How unique!" Here are some great details that I have seen at weddings:
- One bride who loves ice cream had a Ben and Jerry's Wedding Cake instead of the traditional one
- At one wedding we went to, we found our names on the seating chart and our names said "The Future Mr. and Mrs. XXXX" rather than just saying "Mr. John Smith and Ms. Melissa Doe." For all engaged couples at the wedding, the bride and groom had their names listed as "The Future Mr. and Mrs." on the seating chart. This was such a pleasant surprise for us to see as an engaged couple.
- A couple who got married on July 4th gave out sparklers to the wedding party, and took a picture with the sparklers lit up.
- I love ceremony programs, fun rehearsal dinner invitations, and OOT bags.
- At one wedding we went to, as we left the reception, the catering hall had carts setup to serve hot pretzels and chocolate eclairs as guests waited for the valets to get their cars. The carts were like the ones you see in the city on the corners!

What else have you seen that was different and special?

I'm getting married the day before you and I am also in this mode... trying do as much as I can to personalize the day and make it special.

By far, the best wedding detail I've seen was at my friend's wedding last summer. Her then FH was a fashion designer and he designed all the BM gowns himself, each one slightly different but in the same fabric and color. He also designed his bride's gown.

Just outside the entrance to the ballroom, they displayed his portfolio of all the design sketches for the wedding. I thought that was so cool and totally personalized their wedding.

I saw once at a wedding by the place card table they were surrounded by candles and a black and white picture of the couple taken by the photographer. It was really cute. You've probably seen that before but I thought it was cute.

Not too different but if both sets of parents are still married, have their wedding pictures set up on the place cards table or somewhere else.

Re: What are the best wedding details you have seen at a wedding?

Last weekend at mrswasks wedding the catering hall set up a chocolate fountain, which had melted chocolate running and all types of food to dip into the chocolate...
ex: pretzels... strawberrys.
I have heard of this before, but never been to a wedding that had one. I thought it was really cool.
At one of my other friends weddings, they handed out red roses to all of the women after the ceremony. I thought that was very sweet!

I am in the same boat. Trying to do the "little things". I am making cry packs and rose petal cones. Possibly menus and programs. Does anyone know how much it would cost to have a hot pretzle or donut cart???

Re: What are the best wedding details you have seen at a wedding?

Hmmm, don't really remember anyone's unique things at their wedding but I will tell what I made unique at mine:

I made programs with stories of our wedding party, details of everything-it was really a book-everyone loved reading it!

I handed out flowers to all our aunts as they came into the ceremony.

At the reception: I put pictures of all our grandparents and parents on their wedding day on the placecard table- along with a "wedding wish" vase for people to write wishes a toss them in- and I made a card/gift hat box-also on that table.

I had table names of all the first of our relationship with a story about each event.

I had a cupcake cake.

I did a parent dance instead of a mother then father dance.

Re: What are the best wedding details you have seen at a wedding?

I def. want to do some special little details...but I'm not sure what yet. The only unique thing I have planned as of now, is that I am going to sing my father/daughter dance song (I'm having it prerecorded at a friends studio) and having my band play the cd while I dance with my dad. =)

Re: What are the best wedding details you have seen at a wedding?

We did several things
--The nature of our facility was that we took it over entirely for 24 hours so we completely lit the place with candles (so many candles in our colors) as well as did the votive place candles (Pic below). We also filled key locations in the mansion with mementos of our travels -- we have travelled a lot of unique places together and have souvenirs and photos that were spread all around for people to see and enjoy. Great conversation starter, too
--Wedding wishbowl with monogrammed cards to sign
--Fortune tellers from the amazing sonicstef at each place setting
--Our table had a special vase a late friend had given us with the picture of a bride and groom that read simply "happily"
--Detailed engraved programs for the ceremony which explained all the little things of significance going on
--Dear friend of DH, a renowned cellist, played a piece of Jewish folk music during the ceremony--it was exceptionally moving
--Added our own vows to ceremony
--Strolling musicians during guest arrival (violins) and again during dinner (strolling jazz band/New Orleans funk)
--Yarlmulkes were handed out by servers on silver platters as were programs
--We had a refreshment set up for the guests upon arrival so they could relax a bit before the ceremony
--Custom cocktail for our wedding toast
--Special people to us held the chuppah made from my father's prayer shawl/my dad, a rabbi, officiated at the wedding (there is a moment on the video where he pronounces us married "under the laws of the state of NY, the laws of Moses...,as a rabbi, but most of all, as your father" where his voice broke that I will hold always) and we used the groom's late father's kiddush cup for the ceremony itself.
--Custom ketubah
You will notice (a theme I talk about in my wedding review) that most of these things that made the ceremony so memorable, personal, and special cost very little.

Re: What are the best wedding details you have seen at a wedding?

well,

things I remember at other people's weddings:

-one place had the butter on the table molded to look like a swan! (btw...we are now getting married there too! little details are important)

-The cultural dances from the Bride and Groom's background are interesting...especially if you never saw them before!

-One wedding had an entire table of photographs set up ... wedding photos of relatives and growing up photos of bride and groom.

Things we are planning to do:

-Place cards with autumn leaves all color coded for each table.

-The programs will be scrolls of parchement with sticks as framing.

-All of the wedding details are color co-ordinated to go with the autumn theme. (Reds, rust, brown and copper with a hint of green, yellow and deep purple)

-The favor tags I'm using are copper card stock maple leaves with our name and date on them! (this is my favorite find!)

OH and since I am dancing with my mother and he is dancing with his mother, we thought it would be nice to have new parent dance too. I can dance with his father and he dances with my mom.
We can make the second set happen at the same time, and ask others to join in, so it's not too long.

Re: What are the best wedding details you have seen at a wedding?

Things that were a little different at our wedding.

1. DH and I wanted someone that knew us to marry us. So, we had our friend ordained online and he married us.

2.We wrote our entire ceremony.

3. Our programs were designed like show playbills. We had headshots and bios for us, our parents and the entire BP. They were a hit.

4. Our RD invitations were theatre tickets.

5. We named the tables after shows we had done since we have been together.

6. I handed my Bo-K to a friend that was getting married a week later in the exact same place.

7. Our ceremony music was a song written by a friend and was sung accaplla by 6 of our friends.

Those were just some of the things we did to make our wedding tailored to us. I am not sure that they are that different, but they all went over well.

Please please please be careful about this one. Not everyone takes their husband's name and you may end up offending someone rather than flattering them. Ask the couple first and then if you are sure, I mean 100% sure, then this is a very cute idea. Just my two cents.

After reading the above, I was gonna do this...

Do you really think someone would get offended...I mean even if they were not taking the fh's name, its just the thought of recognizing them that is there?

Re: What are the best wedding details you have seen at a wedding?

ok.. now to add a few things that we did that i thought were very special.

1. DH walked his mom down the aisle, rather than one of the ushers.

2. Halfway through my dance with my dad, DH asked my mom to dance. I did the same thing with my FIL halfway through DH's dance with his mom.

3. On our gift table, we had pictures of all of the weddings of our parents, grandparents, great grandparents and even one of DH's great great grandparents.

4. We did an anniversary dance instead of the bou-q/garter toss. The "final" couple was DH's great aunt and uncle who were about to celebrate their 49th anniversary!!

hope these things help! best of luck

I would, yes. Especially since anyone who knows me well enough to invite me to their wedding should know that I was not taking DH's name. (of course my mom thinks I am way too sensitive to this issue) All I'm saying is to be sure before doing it. If you are not, then I would just use each person's name.

Re: What are the best wedding details you have seen at a wedding?

Unique plans for my own wedding...

- Wine vineyard instead of regular catering hall with wine tasting table set up... unique by design.

- Will have a picture table complete with baby pics, growing up pics, engagement pics taken by my dad (saving some money here ladies)in Babylon village by the waterfalls in that little park on Montauk Hwy, our house pics, our parent's and maybe grandparents (if possible) weddings. BUT would not be complete without a digitally edited photograph of our 3 cats... the 2 girls will be on either side of the boy cat and the girls will be wearing a veil (God willing) and the boy cat a big, fat black bow tie! Wish me luck... I'm not the most technologically advanced bride and I have 3 finiky kitties who don't like to be told what to wear

- My tables instead of numbers, will have the names of different wines or numbers in Italian.

- My DJ will play the "first dance" songs played at my parent's and his parent's weddings.

- Both my parents will walk me down the aisle, and I'm trying to push for his parent's to both walk him down the aisle.

- My ring bearer may be M.I.A. - that should be VERY unique... not sure if FH's ex will allow him to attend so I have to arrange the wedding to go either way... not too big a deal... right?

- If my RB is there, I have considered an "acceptance ceremony" whereby the child of the previous marriage is invited up to "accept" the new step parent into the family, he is then presented with a gold medallion with 3 rings on it symbolizing the marriage and him as a family.

- I'm going to be 33 when my big day comes and don't want to be "given away" so my dad will also make an "acceptance speach" accepting FH and his step grandson into the family.

- Centerpieces will be candle pillars surrounded by red rose petals and grapes!

- Cant think of anything else right now This was good, first time I've put all my unique ideas in writing - thanks guys for creating this thread!

Re: What are the best wedding details you have seen at a wedding?

In reply to above post regarding the seating chart idea:

I am actually undecided about whether or not I am going to be taking my fiance's last name, but at the same time it was exciting for us both to see "The Future Mr. and Mrs..." on the seating chart at the wedding we went to. I do respect your words of caution; however, I still did really love seeing it (this was just my opinion.)

By the way girls - the ideas on this thread are AWESOME - keep them coming!!

We had a very small wedding, so it was a lot easier for us to do, but we played the wedding songs of all the married couples to dance to.
