house searching - vent!

Uuugghh!!! Everyone around us seems to be buying houses, but we can't find anything!

We want to stay in western nassau, so we've been looking at mineola, new hyde park, westbury, levittown and now hicksville.

Westbury looks good but we don't want the westbury school districts.

Levittown is great, but the taxes are outrageous!

Everything in mineola is pricey (for us)

Maybe we should be looking in other areas? Any recommendations - we are looking for under 400,000 (I know it's nearly impossible)

Then I think maybe I should just settle in westbury and move before the kids go to school or send them to private schools?

I'm just so fed up!

What exactly are you looking for? I saw some nice ones in Lynbrook under 400000, or is that too west?

What about trying Western Suffolk...You can prob. find a beautiful starter home for that.

Try not to consider private schools, believe it or not the state monitors public schools so that children meet NYS standards and get a better education, most private schools don't rate as well on exams or have the opportunities that public schools offer.

Lynbrooks taxes are insane....I know...My parents just sold their house there and they were paying $8100 with Star. The problem with Lynbrook and a few other towns is that you have to pay village tax.

How about North Bellmore? I have seen a few smaller houses in the area for under $400k

I grew up in Seaford, but FH and I just bought a house in Lindenhurst. We love it -- great community, good school system, beautiful neighborhood.

Regarding school systems, it can be very hard to judge them. Remember, it will be another 5 years before any of your kids enter the system, and then 15 years before they hit the high school. A lot can change in that time.
