NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
I am so tired of dropping 140+ and 3 hours every three months to get my hair done. I was thinking of just using boxed dye and getting rid of my highlights. If you dye your own hair, what do you use? TIA (I will probably just chicken out and continue getting it done knowing me . . .)

I've used Loving Care. I used the wash that rinses out in 24 shampoos. I'm leaving my hair the color it is right now because I like the color of it. I used the rinse when I was experimenting. It does work though, just be sure to get a rinse and not a permant wash!

Don't use the Sugar Brown...I tried to look like Sarah Jessica Parker and ended up orange. But, I love the rest of the line. I also use Nice & Easy..not for greys, lol but because it comes out just like the sample. It is so easy to die your own hair. Just wear a tshirt you dont care about or do it in just a bra with a crappy towel. Both ways work and if I can do it...anyone can. Good luck!

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
I've been dying my hair since I was 17, pre-mature grey runs in my family..
Feria & Excellence have been the best for me.. they cover gray really well, and if you have long hair Feria gives you enough to cover it all..

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
Be VERY VERY careful when you do the back of your hair!! I tired using one of the dyes with a little combs to give me highlights....even with 3 mirrors in my bathroom, and after about 4 tries to get it all even looking, I came out pretty stipey. Only one person has said something, so Im pretending I wanted it to look this way.
Get someone else to do the back of your head.

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
I just did exactly what you want to do and it was only $8 and it was great. FI did my hair for me and besides the color stained shirt, everything worked out great... I was just so tried of alway s paying so much money and I like the natural one color right now...
I will try and post pics...
ETA: You can sorta see highlights in my avatar, I will get a better pic ... here is a small pic of me with the new color and after is the before

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
I have a funny story.... I just KNEW I wasn't going to reach the back of my head. So I called Fh in to help me out. He dumped the stuff all over my head and smashed it in. When we were finally done, I had large uncolored spots. He looked at me and said, feck it, just spend the money.
Lesson learned: I wouldn't recommend dying it yourself if your hair is long like mine.

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
fh puts my highlights in my hair for me, in-between appts. cause it is soooo f'ing expensive to get it done in the salon. we used herbal essences (clariol) and it does a really good job.

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
personaly i would say not to try highlights on your own... there are alot of people who end up back at the hair salon b/c of it....

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
....but if you have someone you trust do it, it should turn out ok. just don't expect a professional job out of a $10 bottle.

I agree about getting the someone you trust to do it - as long as you have someone who can help you put it on and get the back covered, I think it can look really professional. No one knows that I colored my own hair - not even my aunt who is a hair stylist! (see pics above)
I say go for it!

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
as a professional hairdresser, i would never reccomend dying you haair yourself, i cant even tell you how many people come into the salon to fix bad hair color choices. also if you dont do it right and are overlapping and not using color treated products you could cause dryness and even breakage. i would rather spend the money on getting it done. A color correction costs 3x more and sometimes it needs more than one process to fix.

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
I go to the Aveda Trianing School in Manhattan-The Carsten Institute. Students, under teacher observation, dye my hair, and highlight for about 23 dollars. It's the best thing ever, I highly reccomend it - and it'a AVEDA dye-good stuff.

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
I've died my hair & my friend's myself many times & had it done 2 or 3 times.
Going darker on your own is easier & less damaging than going lighter. Only once I had a real problem, my hair was kinda copper, I tried to go too light. But it wasn't so bad that I could walk around liek that for a while. Then a few months later I died it black & it was semi permament but it lasted over a year, b/c my hair was previously lightened.
I actually kind of liked it black, but my family hated it. . . anyway, whe I was in HS my har was long & there wasn't enough dye, so if you have a lot of hair use 2 boxes.
My only concern would be that since you have highlights, it may not cover evenly, but if your last higlighing was a while ago it should be ok.
Also, if you are nervous, get it done professionally, to your natural color, then it can grow in & you won't have to go back all the time.

Re: NWR: Anyone who dyes their own hair?
I use Loreal Preference. I've tried all sorts of brands and this works best for me. It leaves my hair the least dry.
