Whats all the broohaha about wearing a white wedding dress? Discussion

Everyone keeps asking me, are you going to wear white? Like its some kind of scandal if you do. Listen, virgins are a rare breed and I figure they should be the ones wearing an off white color to set them apart. I really dont see the big deal, and yes, after much thought, I have decided to wear white. Not only have I been true to my love for 6 years, but I plan to be with him, and only him for the rest of my life. So share with me why you think the color white is so scandalous, or even if you agree with me.......inquiring minds want to know!!

I actually have the oppositte problem. I am NOT wearing white, not for any reason other than I think the ivory/champagne one looks better on me. People always ask me "Why aren't you wearing white" like I am doing something wrong.

Are they asking because of the whole "Virgin in white" thing or because true white is a hard color for a lot of people to wear.

Re: Whats all the broohaha about wearing a white wedding dress? Discussion

I think if you want to wear white or any other color, go ahead whether you're a virgin or not. I see it as a "tradition" thingy. After 2 kids my cousin wore white, and no one said anthing.

ETS: I'm wearing white cause I don't like how my dress looks in ivory and because of daddy.

Re: Whats all the broohaha about wearing a white wedding dress? Discussion

I defiantely want to wear white but what if there is a little design in it with color? What the heck does that mean?

It is the brides choice, you dont have to hold onto pure tradition all the time.

I don't really associate white with being virginal anymore. For me it is basically just a traditional color associated with brides dresses...when I picture a bride, she is in a white dress. Whis is what I will be in too

I never even considered NOT wearing white. I just figured its the thing to do... didn't even bother to see if ivory looked better on me. I just wanted white.

I didnt order yet but i think it is definitely the one - it is a Reem Acra strapless ballgown - i absolutely love it- i cant find a picture of it online though - i am still deciding whether i should add some beadwork to the train - as of now it is plain but if i wanted to add the design to the train the price would be $2K more! - so i've got a big decision to make - i'm leaning toward not having the design in light of the fact that we just booked a pricey photographer - btu i just dont know!! I'm probably ordering it at the end of April when my MOH is back from St. Martin on her break before her next semester starts.

I cannot believe someone would make a comment as to you wearing a white wedding dress.

I am wearing ivory because I think it complements my skin tone better than stark white does.

As the wedding planning proceeds, I notice that people have a comment about EVERYTHING !!!

Wear what you want and be happy.

Re: Whats all the broohaha about wearing a white wedding dress? Discussion

from snopes.com

The color of the gown is deemed crucial in terms of what sort of luck it will attract to the marriage. White, silver, blue, pink, and gold are now considered the luckiest shades. Blue has always been popular because it signifies constancy, and often bridal favors are deliberately shaded this color to take advantage of its lucky properties. In former times, knots of blue ribbons were loosely stitched onto the wedding dress to later be plucked off by guests at the wedding feast and worn as luck-bringers on the hats of young men.

Contrary to what many have come to think, a white wedding gown has little to do with advertising the virginity of the bride. That construct appears to be a modern one -- little in lore suggests it dates back very far at all.

White is about as impractical a color as one can come up with, and those Victorians looking for a way to make an unseemly show of wealth socially-acceptable knew that. A white dress was its own advertisement that it wasn't going to be worn again.

Moreover, white is traditionally the color associated with joy. Roman brides were clad in white for this reason. Church vestments at Easter are also white for the purpose of expressing joy. A white-clad bride is one who advertises her happiness, not her purity.

Nothing black should be worn by the bride, else she risks becoming a young widow.

Green is also an unfortunate color because of its associations with fairies, and its wearing is also said to foretell a change into clothes of mourning. Green has been deemed so unlucky that in Lowland Scotland neither bride nor guests would consider wearing it to a wedding, no green was permitted in the decorations, and even green vegetables were banned from the bridal feast menu.

Brown is avoided because of an old belief that says those who wear it "will never live in town," a statement taken to mean their husbands will never rise in business or otherwise acquire riches that would enable the family to move up to finer surroundings.

Yellow is widely disliked because it signifies foresworn.

Purple is out because it is seen as a mourning color, one favored by widows from their second year of bereavement onward.

The world of lore has placed such cautions and recommendations in the form of a rhyme:

Married in white,
You have chosen all right.
Married in green,
Ashamed to be seen.

Married in red,
You will wish yourself dead.

Married in blue,
You will always be true.

Married in yellow,
Ashamed of your fellow.

Married in black,
You will wish yourself back.

Married in pink,
Of you he'll think.

Yes. absolutely people comment on everything.
When I told close friends that the dress was ivory they said "O___KAY!!!!!!" I wish I could make it sound more sarcastic!!!!!!!!! Then when they saw me, they said, "Oh you would never believe it is ivory!" Go figure!!!!!!!!!

I am wearing Ivory because it looks so much better on me than white, and my family is fine with it and so is my FI. His family on the other hand, is doing nothing but making comments. So, I came to the conclusion, you cant please everyone.

Does anyone really think only virgins wear white dresses? Come on, this is 2004, who really believes that? Because I know it seems like the majority of brides wear white, and I know they're not all virgins.
