Spinoff..since 2 of our poor Mommies have had stressful weekends, post the scariest thing that has every happened with your child or to you as a child..
...this didn't happen to me but to my brother.
My mother put him up in his crib for a nap on the second floor where his crib was next to a window(you can see where this is going) She was down stairs reading a book when she sees my brother walking across the front yard. She runs outside freaking out, checks every inch of him and calls my father hysterically at work. She checks upstairs and sure enough the screen is on the ground. My Dad rushes home they take him to the hospital where he doesn't have a scratch on him. Now he fell from the second floor, but luckily my father had just the past weekend dug up our sewer and the ground was really soft. The Dr's said he just had fallen the right way. Suffice to say my Mom moved his crib away from the window!!!!

Re: Spinoff..since 2 of our poor Mommies have had stressful weekends, post the scariest thing that has every happened with your child or to you as a child..
2 scary things happened to me when I was a child.
I was a little over a month old and my parents left me with my fathers parents b/c they had to go to a funeral.
I was cholic and the pediatrician gave my parents medicine for me to help me sleep. My grandmother read the bottle and gave me what she was suppose to give me. She thought she overdosed me b/c I went right to sleep and not one peep was heard from me. She panicked (being a first time grandmother) and called my parents crying that she thought she overdosed me. She never left my side and kept checking my breathing, called the pediatrician who my father had as a child and the whole time I was with them all she kept thinking was she overdoased me.
A second scary moment for my mom with me was I had just turned 1 a few weeks earlier and for some reason I was running a very high tempature. She went across the street to help our neighbor who was 6 months pregnant carry some things. So she left me in the arms of my great grandmother. It was July and very hot. My great grandmother was putting cool cloths on me to help break this fever. All of a sudden I started convulsing. I had a seizure in my great grandmothers arms. My great grandmother starts screaming for my mother, my mom grabs me, my neighbor yells get in the car and they rush to the hospital.
In the hospital my fever was 104 or 105. It was dangerously high. The doctors put me in baby intensive care, and my entire little body is covered with tubes and IV's. All you saw was a wave of tubes. My dad was called and was so panicked he went to the wrong hospital.
My mom never left the hospital for 7 days. She slept in the room when she could, and when visiting hours were over she slept in the waiting room.
Till this day, I will be 25 years old the minute I get a cold or I start to feel warm my mom yells at me to take tylenol and sit in a cool bath. She'll call me every hour for me to check my temp and monitor it. She'll keep a little log of what time I took something, and what my temp was.

We had an old dodge that had been around the block!! Well my dad had just gotten off the northern state onto Glen Cove road. And he was waiting to make the left at the light to turn on to Jericho turnpike. Well I was in the front seat and he nailed the gas as to not get stuck at the yellow and my door flung open and I was ejected into the intersection oncoming traffic and all. I did not get a scratch, but my father said it took ten years off his life!!

I have a bunch: -My dad had me on his front seat laying down and someone hit him. I rolled onto the floor I was okay but years later when I got scolosis (sp?) the doctor said it was mostly caused then. -I was sitting on my mom's lap at a few months old and knocked coffee all over me. My Aunt and mom rushed me to the hospital where the doctor questioned my mom and asked if she hurt me on purpose...it was awful I hear. My aunt threatened to kill him and he stopped the questions. -My grandmother lived in a 2 story apartment building. We were at her home visiting. I was 1 years old. The women in the upstairs apartment had a big b-day gift outside of her door and I had my eyes set on it. I got out of the apartment and tried to walk up the stairs towards the gift but I feel back down the stairs and broke my arm.

my goodness...I think there are more stories of me getting hurt than not...
- I was practicing my ballet leaps off our step into the fam room...and couldn't stop and put my head through a door
- when I learned how to hold my breath under water - some kid at the beach pushed and held me under (stupid kid...it was right in front of my mom)
- I was riding a tricycle down a hill...no brakes...fell over and slid the rest of the way down the hill on my face.
- I was attacked by a dog...which required stiches upon stiches
- I did a Luke and tried to reach something on a top shelf...stood on a ball and lost my balance and grabbed the shelves...only to rip them off the wall to fall ontop of me.
I could go on and on

Re: Spinoff..since 2 of our poor Mommies have had stressful weekends, post the scariest thing that has every happened with your child or to you as a child..
When I was 15 months old I had a very high fevers for a few weeks off and on, the dr. gave my mom a prescription that she had to give me every 4 hours, I was only awake like 6 hours out of the day, it would put me to sleep so quick, at one time when I was awake my Grandmother decided to give me a alcohol rubdown and as soon as she opened the bottle I started convulsions, they got me to the hospital. When the nurse called for my mom she said "who's the mother of the baby who swallowed the barbituates?" The Dr. gave me a prescription for an adult strength barbituate and I overdosed! I was in the hospital for 3 weeks.
When I was 6 the ice cream man was on the block and my older brother told me to go get money from Grandma (yes the same one I feel so bad for her ) I get the money and I was crossing the street, I know I looked both ways, this woman comes speeding down the street, and yes she hit me, as my brother watched. I was pretty badly banged up and almost lost the top of my ear (I have a funky looking scar), my left side of my body was scraped up from top to bottom. My Grandmother almost had a stroke, thinking my Mother was gonna kill her.

I answered from my childhood...and I am not a mom yet...but my puppy was almost eaten by a coyote today...
I jumped up out of bed and ran after the coyote throwing rocks at him...wow - is that what the maternal instinct is like...b/c I have never jumped like that in my LIFE!!!

I did cartwheels down the basement steps and slammed my head into the concrete wall!
I was in early elementary school but I tripped on my PJs going down and tumbled the rest of the way.....I don't remember much but I suffered a mild concussion....the ER dr scared the crap out of me because I was so shy and I didn't want to cooperate until he threatened me with staying overnight!
That made me answer his questions!!!
I was fine in the end though!!!
Erica - how scary about your dog!!! Glad he's okay

We had a screened in porch off of the kitchen with a glass door at the end of it. I was 2 years old and was running through the kitchen down the stairs into the patio and banging against the door. Well my last time running I missed the steps and went flying out the glass door. I landed outside in the backyard. My parents were pretty calm and brought me to the ER. I ended up having stitches on my leg and stomach. I was lucky to not have any cuts on my face. Today I have a rather large ugly scar on my leg. Its funny that I can remember the whole incident like it was yesterday. I even remember a young boy in the ER giving me a yellow starburst.

When Emma was about 5 months old I was showing her a leaf. She got a hold of it and it went straight into her mouth. She started choking on it. She eventaully threw it up and cried hysterically (so did I) She cried herself to sleep on my chest. I didnt put her down for the entire 2 hours that she was sleeping. I hate the choking!!!!!

Re: Spinoff..since 2 of our poor Mommies have had stressful weekends, post the scariest thing that has every happened with your child or to you as a child..
I was one of 6 growing up, so I have tons of stories.....
* My mom was in the A&P with the 3 of us, ages 2.5, 1 and me about 2 months old. The man behind her held a gun to the cashiers head and demanded the money and told my mom to get out of the way or the kiddies would be hurt. Everyone was fine and htey caught the man eventually.
* I was sitting on a fence with my mom holding me, and my brother playing nearby. But his ball bounced in the street and my brother went after it and my mom's instinct was to go after him and she let go of me and I fell face first onto the conrete. I got several stitches on my forhead (to which I still have a scar to show for it!). I was 2 I think.
* My brother pushed me into a radiator and I have a huge scar across my right eyelid now.
* My dad was putting in a new stair case to the second floor in our old house. My brother was upstairs with him. Without knowing it, my dad backed up and my brother was behind him, and you guessed it, pushed him off the second floor right down to the first floor. He was about 4.

Re: Spinoff..since 2 of our poor Mommies have had stressful weekends, post the scariest thing that has every happened with your child or to you as a child..
For me - when I was 4, I was playing the backyard with my grandma's dog (Great Dane) and I thought he looked hungry so I tried to get him to eat by pushing his bowl up to his face - well he wasn't amused and I guess I pushed too hard because he decided to take a chunk out of my shoulder and I had to be rushed to the ER for stitches - from that day on I was pertified of dogs.
What added about 10 yrs to my life happened 1 yr ago Feb 25. I had just gotten to work when I got a call that my 2 yr old daughter was being rushed to the hospital because she stopped breathing - it was the longest 20 minute ride of my life back to the hospital where I found my daughter strapped onto a hospital bed and the nurses were trying to insert an IV into her. I then learned that she had 3 seizures before the ambulance left my house and she had another one right in front of me the moment I arrived at the hospital. Nobody could tell me what was wrong with her and the ER dr thought it was best to do a spinal tap to rule out meningetits (sp?) She barely recognized me - she was soo out of it - it was so painful to look at her and feel so helpless. She was transferred to another hospital b/c of a better pediatric ICU and she had another seizure on the way - thank goodness a dr was in the ambulance too along with my husband. I couldn't stop getting sick (turns out I was 5wks preggo) and they didn't want me to go in the ambulance with her in case I had some infectious disease. Once we got her to the ICU - they ran tests and determined that she had Rotavirus which caused her to become so severly dehydrated that it caused the multiple seizures (she had a total of 8) They only lasted about a minute each but it is the MOST frightening thing you could ever witness. She spent the next 4 days in the hospital and had a EKG done and a Cat Scan and everything turned out normal. It was the absolute worst week of my life.

I have a ton!
- Picture it, Miller Place, NY, 1980 (I was about 3.5- 4 years old). The weather was horrendous, it had been snowing for days, the roads were icy. MY Father told my mother NOT TO GO OUT. I guess she thought a short trip to a local boutique would be fine. A woman runs a light, smashes into our car...the car spins around 5 times out of control, my mother is screaming, I'm screaming, and we end up just missing a gasoline pump! (Our car stopped in a gas station). Of course, I was in the front seat, NOT WEARING a seat belt. I smashed my head on the dashboard and I can remember it like it was yesterday, I looked at my mother and said,
"Are We Dead Yet?" I honestly thought we had died! Thank god, there were no serious injuries.

Stony Brook, NY...1980 again! I was around 4. It was Halloween, and I went to the Halloween Carnival at my school. I spent a good part of that day playing with my friend. I remember her not looking so well, but we were kids, nothing would stop us from playing. Well, a few days go by and now I'm coming down with a fever and getting very sick. We find out that my friend just got diagnosed with bacterial menangitis...a few hours later, she was dead. I was rushed to the pediatrician, now fearing that I also have it...I didn't, but it was horrible to loose such a young friend.

Re: Spinoff..since 2 of our poor Mommies have had stressful weekends, post the scariest thing that has every happened with your child or to you as a child..
This one happened to my baby, Linus (my pug).
Linus is a little obsessive-complusive, he hogs all the toys from his brother, Rerun (another pug).
Well, my mother came over and gave Linus one of those booda bones that is made of some starchy substance. She gave this to him without telling us, and my husband specifically told her not to give them any treats, especially any type of booda bones or chewies. Well, my mom wanted to spoil him so she gave it to him.
Well, Linus eats and eats at this thing until it's about the size of a small ball. I see him with it, so I call him, hoping to divert his attention...when that doesn't work I run over trying to get this thing away from him.... He immediately swallows it, and starts choking! I'm hysterical! He can't breath, he's dying in front of me! He starts loosing his bowels and almost convulses. I did the doggie-hymlic, but it didn't work. I grab him and jump into my car, he is started to go limp. I opened his mouth, and tried to get this thing out, but it was lodged in pretty good. So I shove it down a bit...which seemed to give him a slight airway, but hardly anything.
I'm racing to my husband's animal hosptial...I am running through every RED LIGHT, I drove across people's front lawns to bypass all the Long Island traffic....my puppy was dying before my eyes. I was screaming and begging God not to let him die like this. It was horrible, he was just loosing control of all his bodily functions right in front of me and desperately trying to breath.
I finally reach my husband's hosptial and run with Linus inside.
Finally, Linus had that booda bone surgicalky removed. He had to have a stomach tube, and we had to feed him through that for about 6 weeks.
My babies are both fine today!
The pic is of Linus a few weeks after sugery, he has the helmet thing on so he wouldn't rip out his stomach tube.

My Mom said that when I was about 18 months old I fell and bit through my tongue. I had to go to the ER and she said it was horrible with them putting a clamp on my mouth the stitch my tongue. I'm glad I was too young to remember it. After last night with Luke, she told me the story of my accident again.

Wow, bit through your tongue! OMG!!!
That sparked my memory again!
I was a kid (can't remember how old), and I dropped a box of toothpicks on the carpet. One was sticking straight up, and I stepped on it, barefoot!
THe toothpick was so deep in my foot that I couldn't pull it out! I remember my father, pulling really, really, really hard to get it out!

Re: Spinoff..since 2 of our poor Mommies have had stressful weekends, post the scariest thing that has every happened with your child or to you as a child..
One is mine and one is my brothers -
for me, I was about 2 or 2 1/2 waiting on the front stoop of our apt building with my mom for my dad to come home. Well when I saw him, I did some kind of flying leap off the stoop and fell flat on my face. Knocked out some teeth, which didn't grow back for years!
Then with my brother, he was about 5 or 6 and they were riding bikes on a gravel driveway and he fell, he had a face embedded with gravel, some were so deep that you can still make out some marks on his face today.
Another story - my brother was outside on our front, my mother was finishing getting me and herself dressed. Well my brother came in and asked my mom for candy, and my mother said you can't have candy it's 1 pm, you still have to eat lunch, etc. My brother then answered her - I want candy! I didn't take it from the man but now I want it." Of course my mother's heart dropped, and she finally found out that a man in a car had pulled up and told my brother to get in, he refused so the man offered him candy, he still refused so fortunately the man drove away. I remember the cops coming to the house and my brother gave a pretty good description of the car and the man.
