Teachers - Anyone know anything about Masters in Literacy?
This program sounds right up my alley, but I know very little about it.
Anyone know any particulars? TIA

Re: Teachers - Anyone know anything about Masters in Literacy?
I have my master's in literacy. It depends on where you get it, but generally it is a program designed to assess reading levels, identify difficulties and create curricula to strengthen reading....
I love it, you generally work with smaller groups and the training helps in working in regular classroom situations as well.
I went to lehman in the bronx and I thought it was great!

giggles, were you already certified to be a teacher before you got your Master’s in Literacy? I really want to do this but I am not a certified teacher.

Re: Teachers - Anyone know anything about Masters in Literacy?
what's your degree in? Do you teach already?
I was already certified, but a literacy/reading masters leads to certification too, so you don't have to worry. A lot of people took this masters as a change of career....

That’s what I am hoping for! My BA is in English, and I have no teaching experience. I was planning to get my MSEd in Early Childhood, mainly because I wanted to teach kids to read! But then I heard about the Masters in Literacy and it really peaked my interest!
Thanks so much the info!

Re: Teachers - Anyone know anything about Masters in Literacy?
I know that St. John's has a literacy program. There are so many new things now since all the elementary schools have all these new literacy programs.
ETS: I'm a Speech Therapist in a High School and I was a bit surprised to learn that there are alot of H.S kids that still can't read. Hopefully all these new reading programs out there will lower the percentage.

Re: Teachers - Anyone know anything about Masters in Literacy?
I just finished Dowling's Literacy program for my masters. I really enjoyed it (eventhough I complained probably the entire way through it). I am certified in special ed and elementary ed. I am currently teaching inclusion and I really used a lot of what I learned to help my kids learn to read. FM me if you need more info or have questions.

Buttafli....I know what you mean. I teach HS Special ed, as well as the Wilson Reading Program, and I have VERY LOW readers. I think this is a WONDERFUL reading program

Re: Teachers - Anyone know anything about Masters in Literacy?
Thanks to everyone that replied about this. I am looking into a few schools that offer this degree program. So far, a couple of them require that you are already certified and teaching before you enter the program. Does anyone know for sure if the school they went to lets “career changers” enter the degree program without being certified?
Thanks!
