Baker's Insurance! My hall won't let us bring in a cake from outside!

This is so funny!

My family always, at weddings, serves a cake, called black cake - it's the only tradition we do. Jamaican thing, everyone expects it.

Well, I'm getting married kosher, and there was a whole halabaloo about the cake not being kosher, it can't be served there, the rabbi won't let us bring in anything from outside. My grandmother is pissed, but we decide we'll serve the cake to people as they're leaving.

So I just call my hall, and it turns out that we can't have the cake anyway, kosher or not -we're not a bakery, so we can't get BAKER'S INSURANCE!!!

We can display it, but not serve it. And even if we could serve it, each slice would have a cutting fee. But we can't. That's actually a big load off of my shoulders.

Pack it up in small gift box's and give it out with the favors. How the heck will the hall know what is in the box??

Re: Baker's Insurance! My hall won't let us bring in a cake from outside!

why not do it as the favor? if it is served in baggies or little boxes as people leave, the hall can't say anything

ps I've seen a lot of people do this with bagels or krispy creams

No, we can do that, we just can't serve it, which is what my grandmother was so upset about. We're still giving it out at the end.

Has anyone heard anything like this?

It just gets me annoyed that they come up with all these crazy rules.
Baker's insurance are you kidding me that has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever heard of. I wonder if it actually exisits. I understand them not wanting you to serve it incase someone gets sick or something so they are not liabile for it, or in your case b/c it is a Kosher hall but come out and say that you dont have bakers insurance is a little nutty.

Sounds like a BS excuse as to why you can't bring in outside food.

That's why, they said. In case someone gets sick. Although I have liability insurance. But yeah, it sounds like a madeup reason not to let people bring their own food in.

Thats nuts, maybe you can serve it inbetween the ceremony and the reception, or at the rehersal? My sisters wedding had a two hour gap between ceremony/reception and my aunt had some of the family over that werent in the wedding to freshen up and grab a quick bite if they were hungry.

how about going to a kosher baker and having them make the cake with your family recipe?

Re: Baker's Insurance! My hall won't let us bring in a cake from outside!

You can't serve it inside, even if they are cut up at your house in the A.M., put in favor boxes and brought to the reception hall and put on people's plates?

That is outrageous.

I understand the Kosher thing (not entirely but I am sensitive to the issue) but I do not understand the insurance thing. Does that mean if someone gets sick over it the hall is at fault?

Now I have to call my hall. We are having an irish wedding cake that my FFIL is bringing over (it's a fruitcake and it's being brought over in pieces, and assembled and iced during the week by his aunt). But my hall said it shouldn't be a problem. I have to find out about cutting or serving fees. If they charge, forget it we're not having it. FH doesn't even want it, FFIL does.

I just think it's funny. Grandmas's gonna bust a gasket when she hears - she's in Atlantic City now.

The hall could get sued if someone got sick, so could you. Anything that happens at your wedding you could get sued for. That's why I got liability insurance.

But Baker's insurance??!! How surreal is that!

Butterfly - my grandma won't let anyone have the recipe. She's being kinda crazy.

I guess that makes sense. They don't want lawsuits/complaints if something goes wrong.

I've gone to many weddings where they hand the black/rum cake out in favor boxes. In fact, all of the West Indian weddings I've been to hand them out as favors.

Can you ask to sign a waiver that you do not hold the hall responsible for any food poisoning that may occur due to the result of your guests eating the cake. I had another hall use that as a solution when I asked about bring food from outside.

sometimes, even without insurance, you can ask the hall to let you do it if you sign an indemnity - basically, an agreement assuming all liability if someone gets sick and that you'll be responsible for the costs of any such claims, etc.

It's YOUR HALL! HTH! They're providing our main cake - this would be secondary.

So weird
Even the fact that they charge a cutting fee - guess they want to make every $ they can...
They dont' want to be responsible for anything - can you put it on Grandma's homeowners??

Re: Baker's Insurance! My hall won't let us bring in a cake from outside!

I think this whole thing is so silly... When we went to book our hall it happened that the banquet manager found out that my FH is in the Seafood business. He TOLD us that if we wanted we could bring all the seafood in and they will charge flat fee to prepare to food for our cocktail hour. We don' t think that we are going to do it, it is just going to be too much extra running around for FH and his boss to get everything and bring it to them and honeslty it will probally end up costing us the same thing.

But I just thought it was very werid that they would want to take the chance with seafood where honestly there is a larger chance of someone getting sick. I didnt think they would want to have such a liability. Who knows they may ask us to sign a wavier.... this is the same hall that is making me sign a wavier since my florist is doing my flowers as a side job and dosnt have the 1mil insurance policy.
Their afraid of the flowers but not of the Seafood??
Go figure

I dont know if you'll be able to display it, with the cutting fee and all, but your best bet may be to give it out as your favor. It's actually tradition that the "groom's" cake be given for people to take home. It's unfortunate that your hall can't bend on this, it just seems so stupid to me.
