Credit card debt-personal

My question is...do you make monthly minimum payments or do you pay them in full each month?

My goal this year is to really payoff as much credit debt as I can...

Re: Credit card debt-personal

We have zero credit card debt. I freak out at debt so I do my best to stay away from it. I only use it to buy groceries and things like that b/c I balance the accounts better when I do it that way.

I pay it off in full every month. Are there things that I want, but cannot have? Yes, but I am not paying for material things for years that will be long forgotten about by the time you actually pay them off. My opinion is pay it off asap. Think about all the extra money you will have after you are done paying it off !!!!

Re: Credit card debt-personal

I try not to have any credit card debt, since I have $125,000 in law school loans to pay off. However, my credit has not been that great, so I am trying to build my credit back up by paying my loans on time and using my credit cards and paying them off right away. When there's a major purchase (a few hundred dollars or more), I use my debit card. That way, if I don't have the CASH, I can't buy whatever it is.

Re: Credit card debt-personal

we built up a few thousand before the wedding thinking that we could pay it all off with the cash from the wedding...

but DH was laid off a month later - the day before we left for our HM...and we wanted to have a special trip)...so this was more difficult than we expected....

and our debt got up $10K+

we didn't like this at all...we would constantly stress about money...he wanted to pay just the minimum (since things were tight), but I took it upon myself to pay 10% of the bill - I wrote it down and paid that amount off every month...

I was always nervous about debit cards...but its really the best way to go...you don't have to carry around cash...but you also cannot spend recklously...

I happy to say that we are debt free (except a small student loan I still have and our car lease)

It feels so great!!!

good luck

Re: Credit card debt-personal

We have no credit card debt. The only debt we have is my student loans and 1 car loan. We use the American Express if we need to charge something this way we HAVE to pay it off each month.

I can't pay off in full (yeah I wish) but I pay off more than the minimum. Even if you pay $10 more than the minimum you are alot closer to paying it off than if you only paid the minimum.

I wish I knew back in college what I know now about credit/charge cards

I racked up quite a bit if debt back in college and I am still paying them off, but thank goodness I got most of them paid off.

Little by little it's all being paid off

Re: Credit card debt-personal

It took me several years to get out of debt after I graduated from grad school and was living on my own. Definitely pay off more than the minimum if you can, and transfer balances to lower rate credits cards if you can.

Now, I am debt free (except for school loans and my car payment) and pay off everything each month.

i am in debt and i only can afford to pay the minimums right b/c we are saving for the wedding. we want to save enough cash so that we do not have to charge anything. i am hoping that after the wedding i can then save to pay off credit card debt. i am still paying off my school loans and i have 4 more years of my car loans. i think i need to play lotto!

Re: Credit card debt-personal

I generally try to pay them in full. But because of the holidays, I can't afford to pay it in full this month, but I will pay off about 75%. I made a vow to not use my credit card during January or February. I usually use my debit card instead.

Re: Credit card debt-personal

DH and I just paid off about 85% of our debt after the wedding. We still have a little but are planning to pay it off this year. This doesn't include my student loan though - I just mean my credit card debt. I wish I was smarter about it in the past

I always pay my bill in full when I get it. I do have a student loan on the other hand. I guess that's considered some sort of debt!

we cut up our cards about 5 years ago. We pay cash for everything we possibly can or we use the Visa check card (can't spend what I don't have )

Re: Credit card debt-personal

I never pay minimums. I always overpay but not pay off.. can't afford it. I also keep to cards at pretty low limits under $1000 that are separate so it's harder for me to be tempted to use up the full value. If I use them, I pay them off in 6 months tops.. but try to pay them off in 3 months. I"d have more money in my pocket each month if I paid minimums. But I want to have at little debt as possible.
