Chinese Brides

Any chinese brides out there? If so, are you going to be changing into the chee pow dress or remain in your wedding gown all night?

Re: Chinese Brides

Hey, I had an asian bride post, but they aren't to many on this website, doesn't that suck, like are there no asian brides on Long Island. Anyway, my friend who is getting married in 2005 is going to wear the traditional chinese dress the day of the rehearsal dinner-which will be the full Chinese banquet, she doesn't want to change during the wedding reception.

Re: Chinese Brides

Thanks Jessnyc... yeah, doesn't seem like there are too many chinese LI brides. I'm not sure i'm gonna change, after all, I paid so much for the wedding gown to only wear for an hour!

Re: Chinese Brides

Hi,

I was looking for some chinese brides as well! I have just started planning my wedding. Just started looking at reception sites. I think I will change into the Chi Pao. Since I have opted for a westernize reception vs chinese reception dinner, I wanted to incorporate some chinese traditions into it.

Are you going to incorporate anything chinese? Any ideas would be welcomed!

Re: Chinese Brides

Hi there!
I am a chinese bride too
I thought about having a qai poo dress but it may be hard to dance in. I'm also thinking about how much money I have to spend on my white gown and to wear it so short time.
Is anyone following the chinese traditions in their western weddings? How are you incorporating western into chinese?? What kind of invitation cards? Any ideas?
thanks a bunch!

Re: Chinese Brides

hey ladies, glad to see a few Asian brides!! I'm not chinese, I'm Korean and would like to incorporate a few ethnic things in my wedding if not the traditional ceremony etc. One of my close friends and bridesmaid is Chinese and we are both planning our weddings together, hers is 2005. I would like to have some a dance group perform one traditional fan dance during the begining of the wedding reception - while everyone is eating, I might have ethnic/asian/korean themed invites or programs or menus, still thinking on these things. or maybe even favors. I'm trying to see if my color schemes can reflect Korean style colors/fabrics which are very bright - lots of satin fushia and jewel toned colors - so maybe my flowers and bridesmaids dresses with reflect that. My friend is not having the traditional tea ceremony, but will do the full wedding banquet the day before probably in flushing. She is going to try and have the ice sculptures represent the double dragon "happiness"?? things like that......

Re: Chinese Brides

does anyone know if those bridal salons with dresses specifically for asians are better priced, like the ones in flushing or chinatown, just wondering?? Also - what about makeup services/hair for asians? Any ideas.

Hmm.. I heard of this place in Chinatown on Mott Street that custom make oriental dresses. I am also looking for a makeup/hairstyle artist that is familiar with working our skin tones..

Re: Chinese Brides

Wow! Glad to see some asian brides out there. I think I'm deciding against the chee pow, just b/c I'm so limited on time and still have a lot of stuff to do, and dont' feel like going to all the fittings in chinatown. Although I think it would be a lot more comfortable to wear. I'm not doing anything traditional at my wedding, even though my FH side of the family is pretty traditional. Everything is americanized.

Re: Chinese Brides

I was a Chinese Bride- I got married about 6 months ago. I did not do a chinese banquet for the reception so I did not change into a qui pao. But I did wear one for the rehearsal dinner.

To incorporate my heritage in the wedding, I used the color red for things such as the flowers and bridesmaid dresses, guestbook. I also used the chinese astrology signs to name my tables.
Here are some pictures of the table cards and the placecard candles I made:

As for makeup/hair I used Beauty One part of Wedding Group One (photographers) in Flushing and they are amazing for asians! I highly recommend them, but the negative is that they are super expensive and they are located in Flushing (I live in Manhattan so it was on the way to where I had my wedding in LI). For my review of this vendor and other vendors I used go to my wedding review at the link below:

My Wedding Review

Hope this is helpful.

Re: Chinese Brides

GREAT favors and table cards.

I personally am not asian. Im hispanic (american indian and spaniard) but our wedding is Aisan Inspired.

My hubby is Chinese.

I didnt want to go overboard with the theme and Jim didnt want me to wear the red dress. (I think it's more for his sister).

Our colors are Red/Gold-Yellow
Our invitiations are coming from Chinatown and will be in both English & Chinese.
Our favors are Chopsticks in Red/Gold covers (see pic)
I have no CLUE what to name our tables.
I want our guestbook to be yellow with the Chinese Character for "Wedding" in red on the corner. The same character is on our inviations in gold. But Im having a hard time finding one. I think I may have to have it made for me. For me, it's worth the price.

My father has always had this thing for Oriental cultures and took me so long to tell him Jim was Chinese. Not that I was embarrased of Jim but rather my father's goofy over the top attitude. Now that we're engaged my father is happy than a pig in mud. He loves Jim anyhow (been dating for 3 years) now he's real happy to have Chinese in our family tree. heh

I would LOVE to hear more ideas. I feel like such an outsider. I want my wedding to be elegant and tasteful but still Asian Inspired by not Asian themed since I feel that is more for my MIL to do for her only daughter.

ETA:
OOPS: forgot my favors pic So ordinary I know, but we're on a very tight budget.

ssdare: Your wedding looked so beautiful.. Your makeup, dress looked so perfect!!!
Thank you for sharing your wedding!!

see, I am petite, i have trouble finding a gown. I will probably have it custom made.

I don't think I will have the red cloth guest sign in. It wouldn't fit in to a western wedding. I might incorporate oriental favors. You married gals have such good ideas for your favors.. I am clueless myself and on a budget.

I will go check out WeddingGroupOne for makeup/hairstyle. THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!!!

I will probably have my invitations ordered in Chinatown or Flushing. First it's cheaper... and our family don't like the white paper and american style invitations. I don't like the "typical red" chinese wedding invitations (if you know what i mean) ... Something mixture of chinese and western.. I would definitely like the double happiness sign.
I am going to check out the invitations this Friday after work if I can leave on time before the printshop closes.

Re: Chinese Brides

Speaking of chinese astrology, lemme ask you girls this. I posted a poll a few weeks ago about this question... my soon to be mom in law had her brother, who is in taiwan, look up the chinese astrology and asked if our wedding date was ok. He said it was. NOW she says a new calendar is out for 2004, and the chinese charcter for wedding is in black on our wedding date!! Meaning bad luck wedding date!!!! The only "good luck" wedding dates are 4/8, and 3/26 that are close to my 4/10 real wedding date. (they are both weekdays so we wouldn't have booked them anywyas.) His mom is suggesting we get married by paper beforehand, no one has to know, and the "wedding" will be for show. Do you think I should go that far? I'm not superstitious, but it's really playing on my psyche now. It might always be in my head if god forbid something went wrong w/ our marriage. What would you girls do, and maybe one of you girls can prove my future mother-in-law with the april 10th date?!! help!!!

Re: Chinese Brides

bride2bee - That's a tough question. I guess it would depend on how strongly you and your family feel about it. If you feel it may bother you, you could do what you suggested, have the acutal paper say the earlier date but have the ceremony and reception on the date you booked.

ssdare - your pictures are wonderful! Great ideas and really love your dress! You did a wonderful job!

Xelindrya - Thanks for sharing, if you have more pics, would love to see it.

Thanks for sharing all the great ideas! Keep them coming =) We should make this an official thread.. it's so hard to find people going through the same thing...

Re: Chinese Brides

We got lucky from the start on the date. I wanted Oct 23. His Grandmother had no objectsions. We did, however, get married on paper first though. This past year 10/23/03. The ceremony is next year. I unfortunately don't know how they calculate the exact date other than they need the day, year, hour we were born.

Jim is an Water Ox. Also a Pisces
and I am a Wood Rabbit. Absolutely a Leo

For me it wasnt so much good luck/bad luck as much as re-starting a tradition. My own family is very seeped in our own traditions.

Since I heard no objections and wasn't going to just randomly ask in Chinatown, I assume we are safe. I sure would feel better knowing for sure. heh

Re: Chinese Brides

Can I ask a question: It may sound strange but you guys would be the only ones I know would give an honest answer.

My SIL she's 19 goes to school in Albany. She's also one of my bridesmaids along with my own sister. Lastly, she speaks fluent Mandrin.

Jim's grandmother speaks no conversational english. The only weddings she's been to have all been Chinese. (yep, Im the only non-asian in the family, heh).

So here's the question: What do you think?
Should I ask my SIL to translate the ceremony for his grandmother? If so, how? With a microphone and having the officiant pause for her to translate in intervals? Or should I ask her to sit with her grandmother at that part so that she can translate (which I don't think is nice since she is a BM). Or should I not ask her at all?

The wedding guests will mostly be his family and our friends. My immediate family is all that is showing up from my side. (Dad, stepmother, sister (BM) and twin brothers (GM) and probably my older brother).

She doesnt like to speak out in front of public, but I thought if I asked her nicely and said she didnt have to face the audience but rather just either face the officiant with a mike or face only her grandmother, it might not be that bad.

Thoughts????

(Oh and I should say it's really my father who would love to hear it spoken in Chinese. Haha!! He even said that he'd volunteer my stepmother to translate in Spanish to balance it, I think that makes for a very short ceremony said in 3 languages or a very very long ceremony as we wait for all the languages)

I went at the end of April to book them for my June 7 wedding. I decided to use them after my sister used them for her wedding on April 19. I was my sister's MOH and she paid for my hair/makeup by them - so that became a makeup/hair trial for me. I did not do a trial before my wedding and my hairstyle was decided by the stylist on the day of. I was planning to do an updo as most brides do but the stylist suggested the style (you see in the pictures) would be unique and suited my face shape. They are experts with asians!

They charge $150 for a trial and $350 on the day of - this includes a facial treatment which was great for prepping the skin for your wedding day. If you want the head makeup stylist, Vicki, she's at an additional charge. Also there's an additional charge if you want them to come to you. There were some incidental charges that they waived for me since my sister used them.

Those were placecard candles that doubled as favors. I searched the internet for a style of the chinese astrology that I liked.

If anyone wants to use the ones I have, Forum Mail me your email address and I can send it to you.

Xelindrya: your favors look great! As for your question about your sister-in-law - you should ask her and see if she would be comfortable translating. If so, great, if not, then I wouldn't push it.

Another favor idea I thought about but didn't do were mini chinese bamboos, if anyone's interested.

Thank you for you compliments about my wedding! Good luck with planning.

Re: Chinese Brides

Hi all!!

ssdare: Wedding Group is expensive. How much did they charge for bridesmaids makeup/hair?

xelindrya: I went to a wedding where one family only understand english and the other only understand cantonese. I remember the officiant spoke in english first and then in cantonese. What amazes me, was the officiant is not asian. He spoke cantonese very well. I think it'll be nice to have it in two languages. Then again. consider time and if both families really want it.

bride2bee: It's a tough decision. I agree with juizai. I let my family and his family decide on the date becuz of respect and a sense of feeling "everything is good" I don't want any regrets.
