Re: Allow me to introduce the day's controversy.....

Wow, interesting topic. I wish I was around before to really join in. I just want to add that as a music teacher, this whole PC business is EXTREMELY problematic. On the one hand, I would love to celebrate the season and its holidays for our Winter Concert, but on the other hand, we have children with extremely diverse backgrounds, and to include EVERYONE's background would be ridiculously long. I have the head of the school pushing for Christmas songs, and I have teachers and such telling me to not even touch Christmas songs with a ten foot pole. I just feel like, if I was a kid in school, and my beliefs had NOTHING AT ALL to do with Christmas or Hannukah or any other holiday at this time (which I have tons of kids in this category), well, how would I feel about singing songs about those holidays? I think I would see it as being ridiculous. So rather than having a holiday concert, I am focusing on other things that are common to the season: hope for peace, snow and winter. Everyone seems to be content with this and I avoid offending anyone.
But as for taking away nativity scenes and other religious holiday symbols, I say add symbols of other religions, don't take them away. Celebrate the diversity of this country. We're not a "melting pot", we're like a salad bowl You should see all the colors.

Re: Allow me to introduce the day's controversy.....

Just wanted to quote myself to answer the original post:
How do you feel about Christmas Trees being called "Holiday Trees"?

Why call it a Christmas tree and not holiday tree? Because the day which we give the gifts (thereby using the tree) is called Christmas day, which is also why we call it a birthday cake not a holiday cake.

As far as respecting eachother. I find that very important. During my ventures into religion my biggest pet peeve was people trying to 'push' their beliefs on me. One went so far as to say "You're not baptized, no problem we can take care of that today" odd.

I have come to conclusion that for myself I believe that I can not tell you who is right or who is wrong. It isn't my place and I haven't nearly enough knowledge to begin to try to answer that. Therefore all are not wholly wrong and all are not wholly right, to me.

I try to just treat everyone as equals and let it be at that.

rachel...that is a tough situation...and I can't say yet, how I would feel about my children singing certain songs with religious connotations...

X...the debate started over religious/holiday symbols on government land...to me - its a big no-no...so towns get away with having the tree up, by calling it a holiday tree...and to be honest...i don't have issues with it...it looks nice...and it doesn't have religious symbolism...as we have debated...

I don't think anyone is saying to call the tree you have at home a holiday tree...if you want to call it a xmas tree...

where is jenny anyway? she started all of this

AAaaaaaaaaaaaahhh
Ok.

Gotcha.. so how do I feel about a cross on the front of my town hall? Not good

Here's a twist tho... how do I feel about removing a cross that's been on a town hall for generations and generations? Not good.

Go figure.
